To Go or Not To Go Hawaii

Post by Stan In Maryland » Tue Jun 12, 2018 8:20 pm

Well, we are a few weeks out from this years trip and I am not happy if I am not planning a trip so I am thinking about Hawaii for next summer. Due to my wife's job we can only travel in July. I know many of you have visited Hawaii and some have lived there. So if I go, where and do what? We are not huge beach people but a few days in a place by the beach could be nice. If fishing isn't too expensive sometime fishing could be nice. We like hiking, scenery and good food. Could be anywhere from a week to two weeks.

Big Island would be a good fit, assuming the volcano has settled down. The Kona side has not a lot of beaches, but many are excellent, the best fishing and diving, and it's kind of a big place so there's a lot of diversity in things to see and do.

S8 is right the big island is the least expensive, and offers lots to do.
Hopefully VNP will be re-opened, as it is great.
Lots of hiking, best beach is probably Hapuna (near the Westin and Marriott).
Go the condo route, stock up at the Costco (Hawaii can add up really quick).
Also hit happy hours as they are usually a pretty good deal.
Look you can't go wrong on any of the islands but the big island and maui are my faves, but while maui is spectacular everything is pretty much double the price of the BI.
I'm going to the back seat of my car, with the woman I love, and I won't be back for ten minutes!

Thanks. I am thinking of the Big Island for most of the time and then Maui for a couple of days with a beach front condo. And yes, obviously it depends on what Vulcan does with his wrath. There are some interesting house rentals near Valcano's Park. Appreciate the inside tips. In general it sounds like the plan that is forming is a good one. Who knows for sure as it is a year away, but I am leaning that way. Of course it is a bit of a flight from the EC so I am thinking about spending a day or two in Cali on at least the way out. I am also thinking of not telling my wife where we are going. Just what kind of stuff to pack and when to be ready to leave for the airport.

There’s a guy who runs a smaller boat out of Kona who charges by the half day (very reasonable) and let’s you do whatever you want. We fished, snorkeled, whale watched, and swam with a pod of dolphins. His boat is called the Seahawk.

July is ono season.

A major issue would be the air quality, not the lava.

Vulcan isn't in charge in that part of the world. It's Pele you want to appease.

Stan might be a Roman. As Romans believed Odin was the Germanic form of Mercury, Stan could recognize Pele is the Hawaiian version of Vulcan.

I don't see rates so don't know if I could afford him or not. He may be a great captain and may know how to produce but his FAQ makes him sound like a bit of a jerk.

I am hoping they are the same god just known by different names because I already made a major sacrifice to him.

I am not sure of that, cuch. Pele is female.

Sec8 For future reference it looks like it is C. Hawk. I will save this. Easier to sell my wife on it if fishing would only be part of the day.

That's because he doesn't tell you what you want to hear-the USSA is full of bullshit-you people thrive on lies & manipulation and being deprived of same makes you anxious & snappy.

Your way of looking at is as legitimate as mine. I just find it a bit rude. I don't really mind what he had to say. I learned some things from his FAQ's. I just don't think that to provide information you have to run down your competitors. I guess what some people see as "political correctness" I was just taught was good manners. Something which to me seems to be lacking in society today. You can tell the truth without being insulting.

Most of the Kona charter captains are douchebags. Retired drunks who caught one decent sized marlin 20 years ago.

One more than I've caught and supposedly I live near a hot marlin area (at least they have a marlin tourny so I guess it is supposed to be a good area). But then I have never gone after marlin. Maybe I could catch my one and retire to be a charter captain in Hawaii.

My wife is not a spa chick Stan, she'd rather be out on the water with us.

Ok, next July and we will all go on the boat. Actually mine isn't a real spa type either. she isn't a big "water" person either but so long as it isn't too rough and we catch some fish and/or see some sites she is good to go.
