St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin

Post by section8 » Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:39 pm

What are the "must-sees" in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin? I will be there for three days in June.

Which district has all the latest dinning trends?

There is a town downriver called Onalaska. Might be some good halibut and crab there.

Ounalaska is the ancient Aleut name for what is now more commonly called Dutch Harbor. It's a huge fishing port that gave its name to the whole region when the Russians finally discovered the 7000 year old town. Looking north into the Bering Sea.

Unalaska (the town) is on the lower right. Dutch Harbor, the port, is on the upper left behind the mole. But really, the actual harbor is huge and covers about 50 square miles to the left and behind the photo.

There's a five Michelin star restaurant there.

Lost Soul will tell you about it.

Does anybody in your shithole pay taxes? I think not.

Even Vinny is on welfare.

Obviously, nobody where you live pays state taxes. They are all on the teat.

Are there a lot of five-Michelin-star restaurants in Anchorage?

Only Taco Grande comes to mind.

I've been eating at that dump for almost 30 years.

Hmmmmm, not much. It's a gorgeous area, but St. Croix Falls is a small town. Stillwater, across the river, is a rich bedroom community for the Twin Cities, with middlebrow restaurants.

Do some kayaking. I don't think you can jump off cliffs in Interstate Park anymore, but still worth visiting. I used to bike out there from Minneapolis.

You'll need a car to get to the good stuff in St. Paul. 45 minutes, in traffic. I didn't ever go there - being from Minneapolis - but I've heard you can get food there before 7, when it closes.

It is really scenic, Taylors Falls especially. The St. Croix has a special place in my memory. Its confluence with the Mississippi is just south at Hastings, but all the way to La Crosse you've got beautiful coulee country. The Amtrak eastbound to Chicago heads right through it. St. Paul to Winona is worth it - you hit the scenery just before spring dusk.

Edit: it's Winona to St. Paul. I've done that trip so many times. Really pretty country, and there's not much better than watching gorgeous scenery over a drink in the cafe car of a train, even Amtrak.

Bring a rubber stopper so you can wash your clothes in the sink.

I was Wrong. The St. Croix mouth is at Prescott, not Hastings.

You better go to the Dalles House and get some deep fried cheese curds. The bar is kind of interesting. It's backed up to garden area and is a few feet below the grade of the rest of the bar so you're looking down at the bartenders. On the weekends there's usually a halfway decent band playing though I'm not for that much noise these days.

There's a pot hole just on the MN side that is worth the 2 minute scramble and ten or so minutes of contemplation.

The trees should be leafed out. Either side away from the river canyon will give a good idea of the lake country that resulted from the continental glaciers retreat.

Cliff jumping has been banned for quite a while in Interstate Park. I've caught a lot of interesting fish from the St Croix river including some bigass shovelnose sturgeon. Those were caught 'accidentally' while fishing for channel cats btw.

That's about all I can think of.

You'll never know the joy of a top notch deep fried cheese curd then. Sucks to be you.
