Iceland Air

Post by Cyllarus » Tue Apr 10, 2018 6:49 pm

Three months ago booked premium economy tickets for week in Holland and 3 weeks Iceland.

We are leaving on 22nd and received e-mail yesterday from Iceland Air informing me that as of April 12 they are doing away with premium economy and that we are being upgraded to business class on all 4 legs of our flights. Iceland Air J is similar to domestic first class on US airlines (not lie flat but more like a lazyboy chair) so pretty happy with upgrade. Expect that we will be bale to sleep on 9 p.m. departure from Toronto (following proper utilization of decent wine in business class lounge).

Apologies if this seems to be a thinly disguised bragging thread - Should I buy a lottery ticket now?

That’s great.

Wish that would happen to me. I can’t even get Qantas to upgrade my Premium Economy with points to business class.

Is it time for that Iceland volcano to blow again? Oh, sorry.

Eric, always a ray of sunshine!

Eckshually, there are something like 35 active volcanoes on or near Iceland. The 3 major volcanoes are Hekla, Katla and Grimsvotn. Katla is located under a massive glaciar and is one of highest volcanoes in Europe (1,512 metres) with a crater 10km in diameter. Eyjafjallajokull (E-16 for short) was the one that caused all the problems in 2010 is considered a minor volcanoe in Iceland.
The most ominous thing about Eyjafjallajokull is that its eruptions have historically preceded eruptions by one of Iceland's most feared volcanoes, Katla.

Should be fun!

Three weeks in Iceland is a long time. I've been a few times, but only for a few days at a time. Always had good experiences with Icelandair.

I am assuming you are driving or biking the ring road.
This is a good time before the summer tourist season really kicks in.
Buy booze at the duty free on arrival (booze is horrendously overpriced even at supermarkets).
I'm going to the back seat of my car, with the woman I love, and I won't be back for ten minutes!

This. You'll also have instant local friends with booze.

One note of potential bummer: are you sure you'll be able to use the Lounge beforehand? Could be that your ticket doesn't allow for that.

How was this, other than expensive, cyrallus?

Does it make sense to stay in R and just do day trips for a week's trip?

Stunning place. Great trip. Will try and put trip report together next week after I get this consulting project off my desk.
