Sri Lanka in August!

Post by Chi_Rup » Thu Apr 05, 2018 7:49 pm

What’s that like?

I’m enquiring about a 10 day retreat near Colombo, but have a couple of weeks after that to explore. Good ideas? I’m interested in going north seeing as the war is over, the Jaffna peninsula and islands sound very cool.

The Italian tells me I should get a train and visit Kandy, I like cooking and spices but really I’m looking for peace and beauty.

I was there in 2003. I don't remember what month, but I know it was in the beach off season, and I got my ass kicked like I was in a washing machine when I went in the ocean.

* Colombo is an irredeemable hole, and I usually like irredeemable holes, but not that one.
* The beaches were beaches. See one, you've seen them all.
* Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth, et al. is lovely. It's worth spending a couple days there. Ditto Adam's Peak. In fact, the mountains region is all gorgeous. There are a lot of great stupas, and wall paintings and that sort of thing.
* When I was in Jaffna, the war was still going on, and it was blown to bits, the beach was lined with land mines, and there was nothing to do.
* The food is horrible. The exception is the string hoppers with coconut and cinnamon. A few of the curries aren't bad, particularly near the beaches, but the rice ruined even them. The tea is, of course, great.
* As for the people, it is India Lite. The women won't pay much attention to you. The men range from aloof to obnoxious. There are a few of the scams that pervade India.

A retreat in the mountains sounds like the best way to experience the country.

By the way, there are the sorts of places that it's best to do alone and those that are best to do with a companion. The latter is true of Sri Lanka, but, again, if your doing a retreat-type thing, that's irrelevant.

August is mid-monsoon in Colombo, that coast and the hills. The weather is clearer on the opposite side then.

I guess the mood of the people was kind of miserable since you were traveling in Sri Lanka during a war. They problem were more concerned about their own welfare rather than a skunk backpacker in search of photo opportunities during a war. Imagine, you were going back to your parents comfortable suburban home where you can show of the misery of your trip

The bulk of Sri Lanka wasn’t an active war zone, only the north. The rest was a war zone the way Israel is a war zone.

Literature tells me that it’s best to stay in private hotels in the north, as the chains or resorts are associated with the occupying government forces.

I want to see cinnamon growing and there’s an island in the north that has wild horses and was run by a mad Irish adventurer in the 19th century who tried to make it more like home by building dry stone walls.

The meal I got at my hotel in the north was fried rice with blocks of salt and mysterious dead crustaceans in it. I ordered something different the next night, and got the same thing. The bus to Jaffna was hot, dusty, and full of third world body odor.

There are spice tours out of Kandy; the shakedown to buy something is intense.

Now, that's ironic

Anyway, there was a documentary on tv the other day about missing children in Sri Lanka.

It showed a photo taken with the president and about 10 children, of which 5 have been abducted since.

wtf is going on there?

For the record, I really like polar.

If you like lit-rit-ture, Reef, Monkfish Moon, and A Story of a Brief Marriage are all highly recommended. I have a book on the civil war on my shelf I haven’t cracked yet. Jacques Audriard’s film is pretty compelling even if it doesn’t entirely work.

Have you considered Israel instead?

I was there in 2009 and thought the food was excellent. I avoided establishments with pictures of food on the menus, however. I'd suggest if you want to eat well that you should do likewise.

Where is the retreat Chi?

Sri Lanka has changed significantly since the war ended in 2009, including Colombo. August is not the best time to visit the west coast but it's not unbearable either. It'll be rainy. Jaffna is a shit hole and will be for quite a sometime. If you fancy going east go to Trincomalee or Arugam bay. For a short trip i'd personally stick to the south or the hill country depending on what you fancy doing.

If you are spending any time in Colombo i can give you recommendations for restaurants.

I can only recommend the hill country. Didn't particularly enjoy Colombo or S. coast. Didn't visit the north.

Thanks ceylon tea! The retreat is between Kalutara and Matugama. Looks humid.

That’s a good tip about heading east, I’ve got time for a bit of hills and beach before heading back to Colombo for the airport. Restaurant tips gratefully received.

I doubt I’ll do any diving - it’s been such a while and I don’t really want to do a refresher course again - but they say that in August diving is best in the north and east, which is usually a good guide for clearer weather.

Love Sri Lanka, was there in 2013. The train ride from Colombo to Kandy is so beautiful that it makes visiting Colombo worth it for that alone. Not that I see any reason to avoid Colombo. And Kandy is a must.

I also stayed at an "ayurvedic retreat" to decompress a bit from Saudi Arabia, really enjoyed that as well, the massages in those places are unique. Had an extended conversation about that with Ceylon Tea some years back.

It was an easy flight from Saudi, a crazy one from the U.S., but would still want to go back even with the many additional flight hours.

I went to Sri Lanka at Easter. The last few days of our trip coincided with 'the end of the season' and it was almost like someone flipped a switch. Our hotel ( in Mirissa) became deserted overnight, and in rolled the clouds and rain.

So I'd really look at the climate in the area you're looking at, if you're planning on August.

People from the country obviously need westerners to tell them about their country.

By the way, do you know of the Korean ice tea, "Ceylon Tea"?

It's slogan is (or at least was), "All day long I dream of Ceylon."

Not heard about the koren iced tea.

Ceylon Tea is the brand name for tea made in Sri Lanka.

"To qualify for the special, legal distinction denoted by the words ‘Ceylon Tea’, and for the famous Lion logo that goes with it, the tea must not only be grown and manufactured entirely in Sri Lanka; it must also conform to strict quality standards laid down and administered by the Sri Lanka Tea Board. It cannot, moreover, be mixed or blended with tea from any other part of the world. Even a blend that is 95% Sri Lankan cannot be described as Ceylon Tea."

I recall that convo lulu. I was back in Sri lanka in Feb. I had quite an experience. I ended up giving a her large tip (party because i didn't have any change). I asked husband if he got any 'extra' treatment because he always raves about massages in sri lanka. No, he hasn't.

Inland in the highlands is great. We were in Kandy during May/June, so maybe before the really wet weather.

Very tolerable, just had to watch out for steaming freshly-squeezed elephant turds in the street.

And monk initiation processions at the Temple of the Tooth.

But that was 1981, Before the War.

....i don't want to post a useless restaurant list.
Someone might like to look up the menus of those places/check prices and see what's on offer generally especially if they like that kind of food-I've actually done this for budget seafood options here in Vancouver and a number of posters who were interested Thanked me/kept the link so if they ever visited they'd have some place to start.

Travel information is entertainment to many people.

I would be interested in Asian vegetarian restaurants. South Asian or South East Asian, as long as there are vegetables.
