Someplace close enough to be worth going for a week

Post by Scrubb » Mon Jan 22, 2018 5:13 pm

We were looking at going somewhere for ~2 weeks next month, but due to rescheduling appointments, it looks like we won't have more than 10 days at the outside now. We've never taken a trip for less than 2 full weeks before. If it's time consuming to get there, it's maybe not worth it.

So... where is someplace that we can get to from Saskatoon in no more than 2 flights* and 8 hours? Need sunshine, most likely scuba diving, and nice nature. We know we don't want an all-inclusive (we've done that sort of thing a couple times and even for 1 week, it's just not for us).

*that means a direct flight from Calgary or Toronto or Winnipeg

I think you've been to Belize right? That would be my first call. Second would be a smaller Caribbean island like Guadeloupe or Dominica.

Lost Soul - we were in Hawaii a few years ago and I'm not sure we're ready to go back, although I will think about it a bit more.

truenic - Belize is the only place we've been twice. It is easy and nice with good diving so we should think about it. Are there direct flights from Vancouver? Unfortunately, we've always had to stop twice heading to Central America - once in CAlgary or Vancouver, once in Houston.

That I don't know. When were there it was also a stop in Houston, but I think WestJet might go there now, increasing the possibility of something more direct.

oooh, I also really loved (as in want to retire there) Nicaragua. The Corn Islands have some good diving.

Looks like it's 1 stop, if you can get it, more than 1 if you can't.

Fly into Cancun and spend the time Not In Cancun.

truenic - we dove on the Corn Islands a few years ago, and actually the Colombian island we were on in December is very close to them too! I agree Nicaragua is worth returning to, though.

s8, that might be the way to go. We can even get direct flights to Cancun from here, I think, although they might all be all-inclusive vacations. WEstjet might go direct, though.

We were there a few years ago and dove at Cozumel for a week, then drove around the Yucatan for a week. If we got a good flight, it would be worth going back just to dive for a few days and maybe do a couple day trips.

I flew to Cancun (then onto PDC) via interjet direct from Vancouver over Xmas. I think WestJet and Air Canada also fly direct from here to there (and other cities).

We liked it so much this time that we're planning on going back to spend some time in Merida and Holbox.

Just got back from Huatulco...one stop thru cowtown.
Place is full of folks from MB and SK.
Great food, great beaches, no idea about the diving as Marge had a bad cold so we didn't look into it.
I'm going to the back seat of my car, with the woman I love, and I won't be back for ten minutes!

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Now it looks like we're not going to get away until later, so we might be back up to 2 weeks or more.
