Puebla

Post by northern_goddess » Wed Nov 22, 2017 2:43 pm

I've got about a 5 day window at the end of January to take off for somewhere and I'm thinking about going to Puebla. The boyfriend won't be able to get away so this will be another solo trip. I'm thinking about going to Puebla. I've looked at Polar's thread again on the Travel Journalism branch but wondering if anyone else has any advice, ideas, hotel or other recommendations, etc.

I'll probably just bus there from the Mexico City airport.

Cholula next door has the biggest pyramid on earth. The Spanish built a church on top.

If you rent a car you can drive over Cortez Pass between Itzi and Popo. It's paved on the west and gravel on the Cholula side.

I haven't been yet, so can't help you out personally, but this might be of interest:

Cholula was the second city of Mexico/the New World until Cortez arrived. Think 100,000 people or so. Lots of old stuff there.

I use Cholula hot sauce on my tacos.

I bought two giant 12-ounce bottles of it last weekend, at $8/pop. It's probably cheap there. Snag some for yourself.

Ha! I knew that sounded familiar for some reason. I've got that at home as well.

I went there like 15 years ago. It was fun. That's all I've got.

I think it's very obvious where you should go though!

It's on the list! For some reason the boyfriend was doing a bunch of reading up about it while we were in Melaque this year and found your city fascinating.

He was particularly interested in some story about the sewage system exploding back in the 80's or 90's or something.

Puebla is OK but Oaxaca is several orders of magnitude more interesting.

Puebla and nearby Chalula are very nice, but not worth 5 days. The bus to Puebla from Mexico City is very easy. Be sure to visit one of the oldest libraries in the Americas. I can't really recommend a hotel. Mine was just ok but it was very close to the center

I did a day trip to Puebla from the DF. It was nice, but I felt like I got the gist pretty quickly.

I wouldn’t do 5 days there.

I agree, five days is too much for Puebla. I was there for two nights after hiking in Izta and Popo. I felt that was enough. I took a bus tour to see what the city had to offer and none of it sparked an interest in me to explore further. (That said, this was over a decade ago.) But it’s the home of mole, the chocolate-based sauce used in savory dishes. There must be some good dining there.

For the most part I want a balcony and some sun. It doesn't look like the weather in Puebla at that time of year is really what I am looking for. Everything on the coast is already booked up. Not sure what I am doing now.

Check out San Carlos for a balcony and some sun. It's about 20 desert miles west of Guaymas, and always sunny.

It's the same place dishy and her concrete boat met their end.

Oh, thanks. I will check that out.

I may have found a room in Barra and a decent priced ticket. We'll see how that plays out.

Those look really nice. They are super expensive though. A 1-bedroom starts at $165 (US Dollars!!) a night. Translated into Canadian dollars that is $212 per night.

I managed to get a place in Barra, as well as flights, and I have friends there so that will be good for a week of R&R. I'll do some more exploring of colonial Mexico next time.

San Carlos is not colonial either. It's all been planned.
