800 Euros a day

Post by 5waldos » Thu Sep 21, 2017 1:41 am

Reading a NYT piece on travel in Ireland and how to keep costs down. They recommended hiring a car and driver/guide for a mere 800 Euros a day. Seriously? Can that be even remotely correct? Ireland won't rent me a car since they think I'm too old so a car and driver has some appeal but not for those prices. Any one here want a short term job sometime middle of next year?

i would opt for bus pass, great way to meet the locals and the view from a bus is always better than the view from a car.

I'm more than qualified but it's driving on the wrong side of the road.

Told my family this when they visited the city-my brother had the time of his life watching how locals drove expensive busses into the ground and even my sister realised how easy it was.

I will confess to hating buses of all sorts. Several very bad early experiences. Around town is ok but from here to there? I'd rather walk.

Buses are very different these days.

For 800 euros a day you could stay at a posh hotel and take taxis everywhere.

I dislike long distance US buses as well but I rode a few in Spain earlier this year and enjoyed it. Consider taking an express bus between towns and hiring a local guide for each town. Can't imagine that costing 800 euro a day.

Never taken a US long distance bus- my experiences go back to Turkey and Iran. May look into trains- trains I love. I really just want to rent a car and go- for 800
euros a day we could buy an old car I would think if we were there for a couple of weeks. Certainly puts a cramp on my normal travel style. Nobody warned me that getting old would mean this kind of prejudice!!!

We used to do one month leases, I can't remember the name of the company but basically a customer in Belgium would pick out a car they wanted, the company would purchase it and lease it to a tourist for one month then sell it to the customer who saved the various taxes and fees related to importing a new car.

It you don't mind driving a Renault or Peugeot this could work for you. http://europeforvisitors.com/europe/articles/short_term_car_leasing.htm

As far as I know there aren't any age limits.

That sounds ridiculous regarding the age limit. A suggestion: rent in the UK and drive across the border (from Belfast) or get the ferry across from Britain (and see some of Wales on your trip).
I just checked Avis website and there's a tick box on their UK website if you're under 30 or over 70 "so they can show you the most appropriate selection of vehicles". Sounds patronising, but hey at least it indicates that you can hire from them.

As for driving in Ireland / on the left side of the road - good driving conditions, easy to do, the switch is fine as long as there's traffic to remind you, and in the UK the toughest part is leaving the airport (if Heathrow): you're straight into main roads and complex junctions. Once you've navigated that bit, it's fine.

Same/same with Gatwick. And then you need a sun shot to give you the proper direction.

Parking lots remain a bitch.

There is a car ferry from Holyhead, NW Wales to near Dublin.

No prob driving on ‘wrong ‘side of road- have done it lots.

And I a suspicious of the let us help you find appropriate car-I smell a rat. Will look further into it- unless they offer self- drive ones which would be cool.

I think the issue here in the fact that this article was written by some ponce from the NYT....these twatty papers are normally great until you reach the travel section...i always read the travel section of the Guardian and i'm amazed when they quote prices for hotels/transport....its like i'm constantly screaming at the paper "How fcuking much?"

Ignore the paper just hire a car and drive yourself.

It's funny re: arriving at the airport and adjusting immediately to driving on the other side. In Cape Town, you have to drive out of the rental lot on the right, even though you're all in right-hand drive cars. I'm amazed there aren't daily pile ups within the lot. It sucks for literally everyone.

I did that in Palau- having forgotten about that twist. And coming out of the airport not having slept for days and it is night and few lights- I get nervous just thinking about it.

Twice I've almost run over by older Briddish or Aussie men driving on the wrong side of the road here-you could see the anger & fatigue in their faces as they headed into the city-probably boarded a flight in London-pounded down a few, then a few more, passed out, woke up a wreck hours later and set out to fuck up good.

Seems like an upper age limit of 75 in Ireland?
But no upper age limit in the UK.

So I would contact a UK car hire company, find out if you can also take the car across borders / on the ferry (I've done this from Netherlands to UK so it should be fine), then get a flight to the UK and take it from there.

Manchester airport to Holyhead (in Wales for ferry) takes you through north Wales including Snowdonia if you want a minor detour), both countries drive in the left (steering wheel on the right), and you can get cheapish advance ferry deals.

Worth a try - I wouldn't take the driver option.

Watch your tongue! (ok- your fingers!) The magic age is 65. If it were 75 there would not be a problem. Do I sound like I am 75??? :(

I suppose we could possibly rent in UK and go from there. But I was rather hoping not to have to do all that. Well, when I get back from upcoming Greece and Israel trip I will go to work on figuring this out. Some good ideas here.

It's 75 on the sites I've been looking at on your behalf! If you're younger than that (I have no idea) then you should be fine - try another company and problem is solved.

In terms of age... I struggle to place people's age on here. NorthAmerican is probably the oldest poster - he's more lucid than I am. My mum is in her 70s yet is smarter and more switched on than me (and arguably fitter too when it comes to hiking). Age ain't nothing but a number (to quote aliyah).

You have to hire a man and a vehicle and I presume fuel and meals and accommodation for the driver come out of that. I doubt it's a shitty car. Still seems a little steep, but not crazy.

You could probably get around with a few strategic cab rides to back up what the trains can do. It's not a huge country.

This might help.

I was not being serious-no defenses needed. But what sites were you looking at- all the ones I've seen said 65? That makes me very happy to think it is simply a matter of finding the right web sites.

And I struggle to place people's genders here so you are way ahead of me.

Thanks- they do hit us with lots of extra charges but it still comes to nowhere near the 800 pound mark.

For 800 pounds a day I might just bring over my son and have him drive us. He will be just 25 and for that much savings we could pay for his trip. I'm sure he'd enjoy Ireland.

€800 per day for the car and driver doesn't seem unreasonable to me. €150 of that is VAT, so €650 is paying for fuel, the driver, and the car. This is an expensive place and wages are high.

But €800 would pay for a taxi from the far north to the south on a Sunday.

You can rent a car for 50 euros a day. If you drive all day nonstop maybe it's 100 euros for fuel. That leaves 650 euros per day, which comes to an annual salary of well over 150 thousand euros for the driver.

Seems like you could do much better with Uber.

Oh, how I wish running a business were so easy. I'm going to suggest that the tour company has more expenses than fuel and the driver's salary. And like I already said, VAT is a significant portion of the €800 rate that the customer pays.

Well, if they're taking a big chunk of $150,000 from every driver then they don't have their expenses under control.

OTOH does the driver stay with you outside of Dublin? Does e800 include a hotel room and meals for him? Then the cost makes more sense, even if it's exhorbitant. But I think you can likely do much better with Uber and maybe with a car service for longer distances.

Be careful about going off-piste and driving on Irish country lanes.

The premise seems to be, when meeting an on oncoming car, to not slow down and drive up in the ditch.
