Nope. We wanted to, to get the trifecta of Vilnius, Riga and Tallin in one trip. But we couldn't make it work. Air fares are very much more expensive for Tallin than the other two, for some reason. One day...

I went over 10 years ago. LOVE it! It's old town so adorable that it could be in a Disney cartoon. I liked the food too.

It got a bit over run when the cruise ship(s) came in so if there is a way to look the arrivals up and avoid it - do it.

Also liked the (can't remember the name) museum about the war, what the Russians did to them etc. so much I didn't know.

Tallinn isn't as well connected to the other Baltic states as one would expect.

Perhaps that will change when the Baltic railway linking Tallinn to Kaunas and Riga joins them to the European fast rail network. About 2025.

Meanwhile best option might be ferry from Helsinki.

Went three times in 2003 and 2004, taking the ferry from Helsinki. I can't recall whether those are the two closest world capitols or it's Vienna & Bratislava.

Beautiful old town. Very walkable. Good food. That's all I remember. I didn't go very far out of the old centre on any of my visits.

I saw Rammstein there last week. And I've been before. I think Tallinn is a bit dull, out of the Baltic cities, to be honest.

The old town looks nice, but it's very small and there isn't much else there. There's a big restaurant called Old Hansa were the staff go "in character" as medieval wenches and yeomen, and serve medieval dishes. Of course the stag and hen dos love that, as do the German coach parties. But it's fucking awful.

It's interesting (to me) that you will hear a lot of Russian spoken still, as well as Estonian. But Riga is also like that, and there's more going on there. And Riga has more direct flights from London than Tallinn does - as others have said, it's a bit of pain to get to Tallinn.

Tallinn might be interesting to combine with a trip to St Pete.

We did the Baltic one summer and I don't remember anything special about Tallin. Avoid it on the weekends when hoards of Finns ferry over to buy cheap liquor or if there is a cruise ship in town which might be hard to do in the summer.

I've been. Flew in from Berlin on a cheap flight on a very suspect prop plane before heading on to St. Petersburg. Maybe, 10 years ago?

I though it was pleasant, but nothing extra ordinary. I'd really like to see the rest of the country should I go back again.

It's pretty, but a day is long enough there. If you were planning a trip to Helsinki, it'd be worth checking out. Riga is a more interesting place (than either Tallinn or Helsinki) IMO.

I can't recall whether those are the two closest world capitols or it's Vienna & Bratislava.

It's probably Brazzaville and Kinshasa.

I went ten years ago - it's worth a short trip for the chocolate-box style old town. We got the ferry to Helsinki for the day too, which was also worth doing.

If you are goo goo about Prague, you will love Tallinn. Beautiful, walkable city. Full of the most gorgeous women on the planet as well. I was there in 2008- lots of brits stumbling around drunk on stag parties, which was a bit of a downer in the nights.

I thought it was beauful, but it is small so not interesting for more than maybe 2 days. There is a nice open air museum outside the town.

I've also been to Riga. Tallinn is more beautiful, but Riga has more to see and do.

Just reporting back...and I can tell you that Tallinn is quite the magical city, especially at this time of year, there's snow on the ground and Christmas is in full swing....what gets me is the buildings...it's as if they've been plucked out of the 13th century and dumped in Tallinn...I found myself on more than one occasion just standing and looking awestruck at the history of this place.

It's cold as fcuk though I did not prepare for that...I think I'm the only dude walking round in gym trainers...I'm sat in a bar now eating fried cheese balls with dill, chillies and some weird gurhkin thing...so far so good.

I am thinking of the Baltics in May. Tentatively the three capitals plus Kaliningrad, Kaunas, and Tartu.

Looks good in the winter!
You’re a wuss though - I just checked and it’s -2 C in Tallinn right now, and when I walked to work this morning it was -16 C!
Come to Moscow and drinks are on me.

Vinny - great idea, but the visa for Kaliningrad might be a really expensive hassle. However... if the US has the same deal as the EU, you can fly to Minsk from Riga or Vilnius for a few days visa-free in Belarus - I’d recommend looking into it, and try time it with the Victory Day celebrations in Minsk if they coincide with Russian ones (9th May).

ETA: they do! Vinny, try get to this:

Not a destination where I would want to go, but, when you live as close as Lincs does (in the UK), it is certainly worth satisfying your curiosity.

There is no Kaliningrad visa any more. There used to be a three-day visa for Schengen people. You have to get a regular Russian visa. I was thinking of getting a three-year multiple-entry visa and going to Russia proper before it expired.

Do it Vinny - once you’re here, it’s very easy to get around, and there’s an incredible amount to see.

Riga is a good hub for the region and hopping off point for Moscow and SPb - direct flights to both on Air Baltic.

And other interesting places.

I spent a week there. I even worked in a bar one weekend while I waited for my last paycheck from Taiwan to be deposited in the bank. The women were beautiful but the food wasn't anything to get excited about. The castles were nice.
