Re: Panama in 12 days
I don't regret a minute of the trip at all. A lot of it was oarsum. I loved the beaches, the cloudforest and the wildlife. But there wasn't quite as much cultural difference as there is in Asia. And for better or worse, I do like my trips to have that. So though I'm very glad to have experienced Central America, there are quite a few places in Asia that I have higher on my list than a return to CA.

People often ask how does central America compare with SE asia ? i'm pleased i went to CA but i'd choose asia over that region anytime.
Yes, but you're a subliterate chav.
Yes, i feel thats a fair assesment...

Re: Panama in 12 days
Glad you had a good time, Leela.
I spent 3 months in Central America over the winter and gave the Asia vs CA a fair bit of thought whilst I was there. Particularly as it was plan B. Plan A was Asia, focussing mainly on China. As it turned out I'm glad I went with plan B. I love Asia, will return, but I'll also be going back to CA too. Visit places I didn't get to, others that I'd like to revisit, spend more time in and add on South America, bits of North America. Only on an extended (2 month minimum) winter trip though.

Yep, to be fair, there are probably other countries in CA that would have the cultural difference that I look for in a trip. Certainly there are at least a couple on my list of places to visit. And yes, a longer trip taking in two or three would be good. As we were limited for time, we stayed pretty much on the road most travelled. Maybe if we'd had time to stray into less well known parts of Panama, it would have been a different experience.
But none of this should detract from what was a really enjoyable trip.

I like Latin America (particularly Mexico) more than southeast Asia precisely because it's more culturally accessible.

I don't compare the 2, I love them both and judge them on their own merits. Aside from the incredible nature, CA fascinates me for its Mayan culture and colonial legacy. Looks lie a greta trip. I hope you heard plenty of howler monkeys

I didn't! I did see sloths, agoutis, coatamundis and lots of red poison dart frogs though. And the furry black kind of monkey.

you would hear them more likely than see them. They can be a km away and sound like they're just above your head.

As per an email received this morning, seems that the Chiriqui pocket gopher is quite a plague on organic vegetable farms in Boquete. Could be time for some reconnaissance.

More likely would take my kayak to the San Blas Islands. Looks very kayakable.

I'm not sure how advisable that would be. I believe their are supposed to be lots of drug runners moving through those waters.

I suppose that's all the more reason to take a fishing pole.

The Indians will charge you a fortune no matter what they're famously avaricious.

I remember you told me much the same when I went to the Yasawas in Fiji, and I only got hit up once, for twenty bucks, and I got a nice fish from the guy in the deal. Anyway after a couple of days of beach camping, I'm pretty convincing when it comes to pleading poverty. But thanks for the advice. Looks like a great spot for kayaking.

What I told you was that everything is private property if the locals were too lazy to collect that's your Good Luck as to the fish Fijians love sharing he knew from looking @ you that you hadn't had much luck fishing so was feeling generous.
FWIW-Fijians think kayakers are nuts they know exactly how hot is is out there on the water and wouldn't dream of exposing themselves to it without a damned good reason

I've heard those Indians are So Hard Hearted they even charge for people taking pictures.
Maybe invest in some Fluorocarbon for leaders this time the extra clear water in places like Fiji and Las Islas San Blas means fish can be crazy spooky.

Bill, you're a miserable cunt who has sex with fish and is generally despised by humans. You think you can speak Spanish, yet you haven't even mastered English. In short, you're just a ginormous ignorant cunt. I think it would be wonderful if you went kayaking independently in San Blas, mind. It's a fantastic idea. For someone like you, I mean.
