6 hours in Toronto

Post by Stan In Maryland » Mon Jun 15, 2015 1:57 pm

My daughter and son-in-law are going to be flying through Toronto with a 6 hour layover. They are 30'ish, like good food and good beer. Hours are during the middle of the day. Any suggestions on best way to get into town, things to see, etc.? Or should the just sit in the airport and read a good book?

It's a long way to get downtown (timewise) from the airport.

The 402 has 16 lanes and all of them were full when I was on it.

And the subway doesn't go to the airport.

When you figure an hour each way unless it's rush hour, and two hours early for the flight, that leaves two hours downtown. It's enough for a quick tour of the Canada Museum and two sizeable cab fares.

6 hours?

That woud be 1 hr. into Toronto, ,1 hour back and 1 hour to get back through security. That's being on the conservative side.

Yeah, cabs would run you $110 return to downtown Toronto, alas. You can take a TTC bus to the subway and get downtown that way. Stroll down harbourfront and have a beer.

It wouldn't take an hour to get through Pearson's security at most times. Pretty quick.

Generally, I'd say fuggeddaboutit, but maybe someone more familiar with the area can advise if there's something nearby? I know in Vancouver, it can be a pain to get all the way downtown, but there are lovely beaches nearby that I tell people to hit when they have just a few hours.
That said, this service is brand new, and may get them into town faster: https://www.upexpress.com/

Tronna is a gigantic, soul-crushing suburb that surrounds the interesting parts downtown. There is nothing to see unless you go all the way.

Another idea is to rent a car and go see Niagara Falls. It's probably cheaper than taking two cabs to Toronto.

And then get snarled in traffic on the way back to the airport

The Falls are over an hour away from the airport in good light traffic. Go there and spend the night because you'll miss your connecting flight.

That UP Express that truenic linked to seems like a good option for spending an hour or two downtown. Maybe throw in a short tram ride of a few blocks? Although since it's so new, who knows what bugs they're trying to work out.

But really, 6 hours isn't really 6 hours in airport transfer time when you take in delays, security checks, et al. If they're willing to pay for a taxi downtown, they might as well pay for lounge access and just relax.

Must sees in Toronto:

Ummm.... Well, I'm sure something will come to mind. They've got that pointy tower thingy.

Yeah, drawing a bit of a blank, sorry.

A good book? Hell, with six hours I'd stay in the airport even if the only thing on hand was the likes of The Da Vinci Code.

Wait, when is this happening, Stan? The new Pearson/Union Stn. express just opened. $28 (no I'm not kidding, it's so fucking stupid) will get you right to the heart of the city from the airport in 25 minutes. Is this still useful?

For 2 you might as well take a taxi as it is $50 (set rate) - and thats in arctic peso's, and the cab will drop you wherever you like.
Now as this place was shut down for 2 + weeks maybe they came and went already, but I like taking people to the island.
You can take a ferry (less than 10 minutes) from Queens Quay.
The view of the city is great, there is a beach/waterfront, and a kitschy 1950's era amusement park.
Have a picnic lunch there and enjoy the waterfront.
Keep in mind the Pan Am games are on just to add to the traffic fun.

A cab would be cheaper, homes, but I bet the train would take less time. They've only got (or maybe had) 6 hours.

Last couple times I was there I took the bus/subway thing. Cost about $3 and maybe 40 minutes. Way faster and more convenient than any other way I've ever done it.

It's $50 set rate SG.
Had some folks in town a few weeks back and they took a taxi from Pearson to a downtown hotel and it was a set rate of $50.

There's a Sheraton Hotel right in the airport. You still have to clear customs and security if you go to it, but getting there is a matter of taking the monorail. It's a nicer way to spend your time if you can't leave the airport.

The train is only $12 now (no one was using it at $28).
By a lounge pass PD and drink away your 5 hrs.

you can buy a UP express train ticket ahead of time and store it on your iphone/phone.
here: https://www.upexpress.com/Home/Index

it takes 25 minutes each way to get in the centre of downtown. trains leave every 15 minutes.

the downtown area is the least interesting part of toronto, but if you arrive at union station, you're close to the distillery district which is okay for a stroll and a bite and st lawrence market area.

if you get off at dundas street west station, you're in high park and close to roncesvalles or the junction. both are cool neighbourhoods with shops and restos and regular people going about their lives. a slice of life in a neighbourhood. cup of coffee or a beer or lunch. i could recommend places.
this is closer to the airport, by about 10 minutes or so. it might be less boring than sitting around at pearson.

Yup, took only 25 minutes to take the UP train from union station and it was only $13. I'll never take a cab to Pearson again, thank god.

I have just under 5 hours. Exit Pearson, 1 hr r/t to where ever in Toronto, re-enter 1 hr to re-enter before departure. Meh. Not worth it.

No not really LS.
Due to our stupidly overpriced real estate, the Niagara region has boomed in the last 5-7 years as suburbs to Tronna.
Unfortunately the road infrastructure has not yet caught up to this increase in population and the QEW to Niagara Falls from Tronna can sometimes take 2 hrs.+ just to get to the Falls.

Here's a method I like to use if going into town during a layover. leave plenty of time and be sure to hand close to your airport connection. it's best to have a reliable rail connection rather than rely on the roads

Yes, that's why the Up train is now a good option for a Toronto layover because you can count on it taking 30 minutes to and from the airport with no worry about traffic.

Meh. I've never been to the airport. But I did do the RT from York to the falls a few years ago. I completed it in a day. It may have been a weekend though.

But I do recall entering Toronto from Port Huron on a weekday afternoon, and encountering 16 lanes of stopped traffic on the 401 from the airport to the road to the uni (Young?), and then down to the HoJo's. It was two hours one way over the final 10 miles. I was not a happy boy, but I was impressed with the 16 lanes full of stopped cars, and wishing there were 32. A Los Angelino would have felt right at home there.

Yeah, but polar isn't starting from downtown York either, so knock off two hours on the weekend RT.

As any Pegger ought to know, the stretch from the airport to downtown Toronto is the worst.

But he's seen the falls, so he isn't going anyway. And more's the pity.

I wanted to see his travel journalism pictorial on the 6-hour airport-falls-airport RT, just to see if it could be done. It could.

Rule number 1 when you have around a 6 hour layover, always have an easy return route to the airport. One accident on the highway between Niagara falls and Toronto and you've missed your flight. Plus, as I already said, I've been to the falls 4 x

A six-hour layover in any airport the world over is probably too short to try to see anything much. Changing trains would be another story.

The ROM in Toronto is a great collection, but probably not accessible in the time you have, ditto the Ontario Art Gallery, which has stunning Native American art.
