Croatia end of April

Post by rezuar » Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:31 am

Hi All,
I´m going to Split and Makarska at the end of April, and was wondering what the weather is going to be like? I know there will be wind (pun NOT intended  )
How cold is it going to be? 15 or 25°C? How much rain shall I expect?
Thanks a lot!

April is as wet as it gets here, but you should be ok on the coast.
It'll be closer to 25°C than 15°C during the day, but the nights will still be cold, so pack a warm sleeping bag if you plan on camping.
Last years it was around 30 degrees that time of the year.
It depends how tough you are, but you can usually swim in the Adriatic in late April/early May. It might not be particularly pleasant, but still.

Barbi, we´ll be in a hotel, so the night chill shouldn´t be an issue... (hopefully).
We go to Croatia every September (as all Czechs do, after all), but this time husband´s going sailing, so I thought I could get my long overdue sea fix. :)

How was the trip, rezuar? We’re thinking of maybe going to the same two places in a couple of weeks’ time.

Hot, hot, hot. That rocky Croatian coastline is like one gigantic heat bank once the sun hits it for a couple of weeks. The first time we went to Dubrovnik it was late May early June. Blistering hot in the midday sun.

Good comments - we are now thinking Istria with a cheap flight to Pula.

But which town to stay in? Wife and daughter want beach and pool, I want sea, interesting town, not completely over-run with tourists, and as a bonus some nearby hills.

Holiday starts in 8 days and still nothing booked, fully flexible, so advice is appreciated!

not Istria, but my fav was Zadar. small but interesting city and not overrun with tourists (at least not like Split and Dubrovnik), beautiful beaches (pebble) within walking distance from city, close to Plitvice and Krka national parks and the Kornati Islands offshore.

Thanks - Zadar might not happen this year, but I like the suggestion - it looks in a prime spot on the map (coast, big mountains) but I hadn’t heard of anyone who’s been there. Sand also annoys me so I prefer a pebble beach!

Zadar is good. Generally quieter than Split. We also stayed a couple of nights further up the coast at Senj (pictured).

I still grumble about my trip to Zadar, c. 1985. I was living in Riyadh and planned a trip to Italy and Yugoslavia with a friend who was living in Paris. I asked her to buy a guidebook, but she didn't. We took the ferry from Rimini to Zadar and at the ferry landing there was no sign of tourist info or a hotel or anything similar. A woman who spoke a little Italian asked if wanted a taxi (unofficial). I said in my not very good Italian that we needed a hotel. Among other things, she said there was a place called Borik with lots of hotels. I was thinking that must be the tourist center so I had her take us to Borik. It turned out to be a sort of socialist workers' Kraft durch Freude resort, no place to eat but the hotel buffets and, unless you wanted to join the volleyball game of Partizan Lightbulb Factory #2 vs Hajduk Slivović Distillery, nothing to do except walk along the corniche. And miles from town, which we never got to see.

Zadar is a nice enough place to park one's arse for a couple of days. Good beer and the stuffed baby squid are shit hot. But it does lack the big ticket items such as Diocletion's palace in Split and stunning setting of Dubrovnik.

Simon, take a look at the Laguna Parentium Hotel.
