Puglia Italy

Post by Vodd » Sun Feb 10, 2019 5:58 pm

Does anyone have much experience of this area? What are the highlights and what to avoid? Will be with family in ultra busy August so might only spend one week near the beach and the other one in the countryside where it's hopefully more peaceful.

I have no advice. I worked for a guy from Puglia and he swore it was the best part of Italy. He still owned one of those little houses with a stone roof. I’m posting this because I’d like to go there someday and so want to track this thread.

I spent a pleasant few hours in Otranto in 1973 while waiting for the ferry to Corfú, and a friend enjoyed a few days there about ten years later. That may or may not be any great help.

It's up there with my reading on the Roman architecture, so thanks.

The stone-roofed houses are called trulli. You can skip Alberobello. Vieste is worth a visit and where I'd spend my time by a beach. Plenty of agriturismo accommodation inland. It'll be hot in August. Lecce is more beautiful than Bari, but I prefer Bari as a city.

I like Puglia, but I'd probably opt for Sicily if I were heading to the south of Italy as a family. The food is better and there is a more developed tourist infrastructure, especially along the coast with more child-friendly accommodation.

Ok, I've gone for Sicily instead. It'd better be good.

Oh drat! Not 2 hours after booking it all a postcard has been delivered offering me a $60 discount on my next Booking.com, which is who I booked one of our villas through.

Booking usually has good cancellation policies- any chance of cancelling and rebooking?

Not worth it for 60 dollars, enjoy your trip and know you have 60 off your next trip...
