Hockey Thread 2018/19

Post by eric84 » Thu Oct 04, 2018 7:51 pm

Another season has started. The Leafs begin with a victory though it wasn't all that pretty. Leafs-Jets final is a distinct possibility. Let's all hope and pray it happens this year.

Thanks for starting this eric!
Well, as a Canucks fan, can't say the season is looking bright. So I'm just going to be happy with Boeser and Pettersson and hope that sometime down the road, things will start to look up.
That said, I watched Canucks/Flames and it was entertaining, simply because it was a little Wild West out there.
Either way, I love the start of hockey season.
Good luck to your Jets! I hope the do make it all the way this year! I know the city was on fire supporting them.

Pettersson looks like he's a special player. I saw him break Dylan Strome's ankles. Seeing a 2000 born player (my son was born in 2000) Kotkamiemi for the Canadiens makes me feel especially old.

I read somewhere that tickets for the opener were the cheapest that they have been on the secondary market in 20 years.

Ottawa is going to see a lot of empty seats this year. Meanwhile, a pair of greens went for 800 bucks in Toronto.

So, Matthews and Tavares have had a pretty good start, I'd say.

The Leafs problems is the have to get by Tampa, the Bruins and the Sens.
Their defense is still suspect and goal tending is still not a given.
Plus they have oh 1/2 a century + of expectations to overcome.
I like the Jet's chances better.

The Sens? Uh, they're not going to be an issue. Tampa, yes. Boston got worse but still competitive.

The Jets will be good but the Central division is very, very competitive so you have to have everything working.

Well, the Caps are in another division so wouldn't have to face them until the Conference final in the current format.

You just said Jets-Leafs in the final....the Caps be another hurdle for that to happen.
I just think the Jets have better goal tending and that will make the difference.
I saw some Vegas odds before the season, and the Jets had the 2nd best and the Leafs the 5th, and I just thought why the difference....and I think behind the blue line is where the Leafs still need help....I think they just think well we'll score 4 or 5 goals a game so it wont matter...but come playoff time that is not so easy to do.

I get the feeling Dubas is invested in the young defenceman he got so I think he's going insist Babcock develop them rather than trading for a veteran.

Going to the Leafs-Jets game tonight. It's going to be on the NBC hockey network as their Wednesday game. Can't remember two Canadian teams being on US television like that. Hope it's a barn burner.

I'm always surprised when the Canucks play the Blues-surprised at all the excellent players who's names I recognise.

It's puzzling why the franchise is such a shit show though.

Bos over Tor
Was over Car
NYI over Pit (Probably not gonna happen, but it's what I want to happen)
Col over Cal (My upset pick)
SJ over LV
Nas over Dal
STL over Win

2nd Round

TB over Bos
Was over NYI
SJ over Col
Nas over STL

Conference Championships

TB over Was
SJ over Nas

Stanley Cup

TB over SJ

Tampa bay is as close to a consensus choice to make the final as we have had in years. SJ is a team I always think will reach the final but, this year, I don’t like their goaltending.

I think it'll end up being Tampa-Nashville final. In my longshot playoff pool, I have the Leafs, Pittsburgh, Jets and Flames as semi finalists. That would make Moe's head explode!

Question for hockey fans - how much is a ticket (the price range) for a seat at the Stanley Cup finals? And is it a best of seven?

Reason I ask: CSKA Moscow are in this season’s Gagarin Cup final (against Avangard Omsk), it starts on Saturday (best of seven), and I’m wondering whether to get tickets for the family...

It would depend where the finals were. If it's in the Canadian market, you'd be lucky to scrouge up a ticket on stubhub for a thousand bucks in the nosebleeds. If it was in a less hockey fanatical market in the US, you would have likely an easier getting a ticket and it costing only in 3 figures range.

I had a look, just for fun, at Gagarin Cup finals tickets and see that it ranges from 20-140 Euros a ticket which would be a steal here. The KHL is probably the 2nd best professional hockey league in the world so if you have the money, I'd say it's worth having a look.

I'd say similar but it's not nearly the level of the NHL-players skate slower and don't bother to play nearly as hard-for whatever reason Russian hockey players in Russia aren't as motivated (and neither are foreigners who play there).

Having never seen an entire KHL game, I wouldn't know for sure. I do know that there is a player from Winnipeg named Nigel Dawes who was just a middling NHLer who went to the KHL and has become of their bigger stars over the years. Now playing in Kazhakstan. It does seem where Russians who can't cut in the NHL go back along with a few North American NHLers.

I've watched a number of KHL videos on youtube-or tried to-someone on a Reddit hockey sub told me if I wanted to learn that's what I should do and he was right it's 'not first rate'.

They do make decent money though and a job is a job.

Surprised at how lacklustre Boston was-certainly Toronto's effort was better but they don't have all that much talent.

So we got tickets for the Gagarin Cup final (the first game). Good atmosphere! Omsk are in the finals for the first time, but CSKA just seemed too strong for them last night. It’s one of those sports that’s better to watch live rather than on TV - it’s easier to see the puck for starters...

They have fans [Russian Defence Minister present but not shown - ЦСКА is the army team, after all]
Image

They have songs. A lot of songs actually. Much more atmospheric than the Rangers game I went to a million years ago.

I love it too. They didn’t, but a nine year-old figure skater performed to the tune at the second interval, everyone was clapping and singing along. Good atmosphere.
