Steph Curry Went To London, And Nobody Cared

Post by Lost Soul » Wed Sep 19, 2018 1:21 pm

One of the most famous sports people on earth can walk around London without being noticed.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/us- ... 41161.html
You could say that. More specifically, you could say that according to ESPN, Curry is the ninth most famous sportsperson in the world, behind only LeBron James and Kevin Durant from his own sport; Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar from football; Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal from tennis, and Tiger Woods from golf. According to Forbes, he’s also the world’s eighth-highest paid athlete, having signed the first $200m contract in NBA history last year.

How many people would recognize Messi in a large US city? I'm sure it would be a similar reaction. Not sure why that's even noteworthy.

I am pretty sure that messi would be recognised all over the world but then the world is not the USA. I have never heard of Stephen curry. Just underlines how insular North Americans are.

Had to look him up. Basketball isn't popular in the UK.

Maybe he needed to go to the continent to get noticed where basketball is a bigger deal.

The fact that you don't know who Stephen Curry is doesn't actually underline how insular North Amerikkkans are, you fuckwitted spunk monkey. It actually demonstrates how insular you are.

I'd argue that Serena Williams and Anna Khornikova are as famous (if not more so) than Durant or Curry.
I wouldn't know either of them if they walked up to me and I live on this side of the pond.
Shit I'd say a comotose Michael Shumaker and Lewis Hamilton would get more recognition as well.

He is known down here in the wilds of Australia, Basketball is another of the Sports we play down here, that the UK doesn't know exists.

Matter of a fact several Aussies have played in the NBA, with the latest Ben Simmonds taking out the rookie of the year for the 76's last season.

Messi would be mobbed in any Mexican town in the US, as well as soccer hotspots like St. Louis, Columbus and Seattle. So 15-20% of the country would recognize him.

I see him having a lucrative retirement playing for LA after he craps out of La Liga.

Jurgen Klinsman always used to holiday (note: not vacation) in the USA because of the anonymity it afforded him during his playing career.

Despite the fact that basketball is completely wank I think most people would recognise a Micheal Jordon or shak O’Neil because both were global icons. Steph Curry is probably not very marketable because he is not that good and American global reach is in the wane.

....and yet nobody has heard of him. The assumption that he is a global megastar because he is a 'face' in the US just underlines American insularity. You assume that America is the world. I can pretty much guarantee that nobody outside of the Philippines would recognise him in SE Asia either but they would definately recognise a Beckham, Renaldo or Messi.

Forgive my ignorance but I have never heard of the guy.

Beckham was not a great footballer but he was a global icon. Presumably nobody is marketing Steph Curry because they is no market for Steph Curry. Even though Basketball in not a truly global sport like football, there was a time when famous players such as Jordon were everywhere. Begs the question as to what's changed.

Yes. Several Aussies have even chosen to go to college in Tucson (University of Arizona) in order to learn the game and hopefully be drafted into the NBA.

Curry wouldn't be too well known, but LeBron James would be.

Which means it's less a basketball thing, and more how a player is "branded" by the sports shoe company that sponsors him.

I doubt whether many Londoners would recognise Sam Burgess on the streets although his awful stint in Union did raise his profile a bit. Most East Coast Aussies would recognise him in a line up.

Worldwide, all of these chaps would be far more famous than any basketballer. There’d be another 50, just behind them.

The nominees for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018:

Cristiano Ronaldo
Kevin De Bruyne
Antoine Griezmann
Eden Hazard
Harry Kane
Kylian Mbappe
Lionel Messi
Luka Modric
Mohamed Salah
