Golf: The PGA Championship At Bellerive CC, St. Louis, Missouri (August 9-12, 2018)

Post by steveogolf » Mon Aug 06, 2018 7:43 pm

The final Major of 2018 starts on Thursday at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Bellerive course is a long one, 7,300 yards playing to a Par of 70 with 4 Par 3's, 2 Par 5's, and lots of very long Par 4 holes.
The experts predict that the winner will be a long hitter, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, or another player who can belt the ball a long way.
The greens at Bellerive are very large. But the talk of the week is that the greens are burned out in patches due to the very hot weather in the Midwest this summer. However, most of the burned sections are on the outer edges of the greens and not near where the flag sticks will be placed.
It was at Bellerive that Gary Player won the U.S. Open back in 1965 --- to become only one of a few to win all of the Majors at least once.

I'll go with Dustin Johnson. He's been playing really well lately, capping his booming drives with pinpoint iron play and a somewhat steady putter.

Any of "the usual suspects" could win this one.
The latest news is that the PGA CANNOT cut the greens so that they run very fast (e.g., 12 on the Stimp meter) because of the very hot conditions, so the greens will be running slower than in the past. I'm not sure who this will favor.

Round # 1 : Rickie Fowler had a good day with a 65 (-5), and leads, but with other notable players are still on the course or yet to start.

Lots of scores under par, but Fowler still leads at - 5.
Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods with 70 (Even Par).

Play resumes at 4AM tomorrow.

My nephew played on the University of Kansas Golf Team with Gary Woodland for 2 years, circa 2004-2006. Woodland was initially a college basketball player at Washburn University in Topeda, Kansas before giving up basketball and transferring to KU to play golf.
Woodland is one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, so it is not surprising that he is at or near the top of the leaderboard.
But there are so many top tier players within 5 shots of the lead, including Tiger Woods.

It is great TV.

Everybody, the TV announcers included, is rooting for Tiger.

I submit he might have shot a 62 on round 2, but for the rain delay.

Gary Woodland is choking.

10 under par is pretty good when you can't drive the ball straight.

He never could drive it particularly straight even when he was winning. Long, but not straight.

His short game bailed him out.

John Rahm is now in the mix a birdie at # 8. I saw him play a dozen times as an amateur when he played college golf for Arizona State University.

It's going to be tough for Tiger if Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka keep making birdies. Nobody out there is missing any putts.
But this is a great final round because so many top players in the world are in contention.

It's vintage Tiger Woods in Round # 4.
He is playing like the old great Tiger Woods. Only 1 shot back playing the 16th hole.

Yes, the course is too easy. I said it earlier. But these guys are hitting great shots too.
Yes, the only weak part of Tiger's game is his play off the tee.
It looks like Tiger will finish 3rd.
Brooks Koepka is just too good from tee to green, and it looks like he will win it.

Brooks Koepka is the PGA Champion. He played great golf. I know his sports agent personally -- Rocky Hambric.
But Tiger Woods finished 2nd, and showed that He's Back! Tiger for the U.S. Ryder Cup Team!

One would have thought that with the number of replays on his last putt (and birdie mind) and the roaring of the crowd even after going to the score card shack, that HE won the tournament.

Fans weren’t excited for koepka winning clearly. If tiger was even average off the tee, he would have won.

But there's never really been an "average" for Tiger off the tee. Even in his heyday he was erratic off the tee. He and Koepka missed a number of "easy" birdie putts. It's just that I think each missed about the same; so yeah, Koepka could have won by a bigger margin or Tiger could have tied or won...that's golf.

Tiger doing the fist pump in Sunday red for finishing second seems sad. But in his mind he must think he's the favorite to win next year at Augusta if nothing changes for him physically. Bookies will be thinking the same.

That should be the unanimous conclusion. He was competitive with the leaders in the (British) Open Championship and in the PGA Championship. He IS capable of winning another Major assuming that his body holds up.
