Golf: The U.S. Open At Shinnecock Hills GC (June 14-17, 2018)

Post by steveogolf » Tue Jun 12, 2018 7:18 pm

Golf fans are gathering on Long Island New York this week for the U.S. Open which starts on Thursday at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a links style course that will play at 7,445 yards (Par 70). Tiger Woods has come to play, and is staying on his $ 20 Million Dollar yacht which is docked on Long Island.
Past winners on this course include Goosen, Pavin, and Raymond Floyd. Many will remember the much replayed 4-wood second shot hit by Corey Pavin to the long Par Four 18th hole in the final round of the 1995 U.S. Open. And who finished second to Pavin that year? -- it was Greg Norman again.
The course is considered by many to be the most difficult of the U.S. Open venues over the past 20 years. The winning scores during the past 3 U.S. Opens at Shinnecock Hills have been - 1, Even, and - 4.
The greens will be brutal as usual, and the rough will be deep for those who miss fairways off the tee.
There is a video going viral which shows the severe slope of the 18th green-- a ball dropped on the right side of the green takes the severe undulation and rolls off the front of the green.
The U.S.G.A. has widened the landing areas on the par 4 and par 5 holes to an average of 41 yards (compared to 26 yards in 2004).
Different this year in the U.S. Open is the format of a Playoff if there is a tie after 72 holes. In the past the Playoff has been on Monday (18 holes of stroke play). This year it has been changed -- It will be a 2 hole playoff (aggregate score), and if the players are still tied after 2 holes then it will be sudden death thereafter.
The Odds: The top favorites are Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Justin Thomas, Jason Day, John Rahm, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, and Phil Mickelson.
Make your pick, and watch -- It's on Fox TV in the U.S.A.

Is Joe Buck still the lead play by play guy on the Fox broadcast?

Yes -- Joe Buck, Paul Azinger, and Brad Faxon, with Curtis Strange (on course rover); and a few others.

He's not alone. Jordan Speith and Jason Gay barely breaking 80.

The Shinnecock Hills golf course is the winner so far. The wind is a big factor as it is blowing hard.
Live streaming coverage on the computer at usopen.com starts at 10:43 a.m. (Pacific Time) and follows the group that includes Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Thomas. Let's see if either of them can do better than those who have scored in the high 70's today.
Woods, Johnson, and Thomas are off to a slow start. Each hit a good drive in the fairway on the Par 4 First Hole, but all 3 missed the green with their second shots (none of the second shots was longer than 145 yards). Tiger takes a triple bogey 7 on the hole and is already + 3 after one hole.

My impression of the Shinnecock Hills golf course so far:
The course set-up is too difficult at the green complexes, with those closely cut fringes around the greens on slopes designed to take a decent shot down a steep hill and make an up-and-down too difficult for even the best of the pros.
The fairways are too wide at the driving areas. They should be narrower to place more emphasis on driving accuracy.

Golfers really haven't said the course is unfair though. USGA could've made pin placements even more hellish but didn't. I do agree that US open courses should have narrower fairways.

As I noted in the OP, the fairways were, on average, 26 yards wide at the driving areas the last time the U.S. Open was played at Shinnecock Hills in 2004, but are, on average, 41 yards wide this year.

Part of the problem is they keep needing to lengthen the courses so need to be somewhat fair by widening the fairways.

Feels like Dustin Johnson could run away with this. Of course, there's always his shaky putting to make things interesting.

True --- The longer the drives go, the greater the standard deviation will be from "straight" to "off-line", but not by 57.69 percent ( 41 yards divided by 26 yards ).

Did you see the look on Tiger's face when D. Johnson sunk a 45 footer for eagle?

Priceless. Now he knows what it felt like to his competitors back in the day.

And Mickelson shoots an 11 over. Go away already; you're 49 and you suck.

To be fair to Phil the course was extremely difficult and nearly unplayable the way the greens dried out in the later rounds.

Phil is getting raked over the coals for intentionally hitting a moving ball. I don't blame him a bit.

What, no OP about that? I don't buy Phil's explanation at all. He ran after that put and swatted it back in frustration. He didn't do the math on the 2-stroke penalty in that 1/2 second it took to swat it back.

Sure he did the math, Pez. He said he'd thought about doing it (hitting a moving ball) many times in the past fully aware of the 2 stroke penalty. He decided to accept the penalty versus ending up 30 yards away down in a hole hitting back up to a nearly impossibly fast green. Cheating? No. Questionable sportsmanship? Yes.

Not a fair test on Saturday just as the USGA admitted, but is definitely a fair test so far through 9 holes of the final round -- good shots are being rewarded and poor shots are being penalized -- just the way it should be.
Looks like it's down to 4 guys now who can win it -- Koepka, Johnson, Reed, and Fleetwood.

By the way, excellent TV coverage by FOX this year -- good commentary, good technicals like the split screen showing the player hit the shot on the left and the tracer view on the right, and also good stories they are telling about the players and the history. FOX has come a long long way since their first US Open telecast at Chambers Bay with Greg Norman as commentator which was bad bad bad.

Congratulations to U.S. Open Champion Brooks Koepka, one of the few repeat winners in U.S. Open history.
Great playing on a difficult but a very fair course on Sunday for a final round of 68, and a finishing score of + 1 for a 1 shot win over Tommy Fleetwood of England who shot a final round 63.
Brooks played great from tee to green, and made those putts that have to be made.
Interestingly, I know members of his management team at Hambric Sports -- Rocky Hambric (CEO), and Walker Huddy, who played on the CAL golf team before joining Hambric Sports -- and I frequently see both of them at college and amateur tournaments in California where they are looking to recruit the pro stars of the future. Hambric Sports represents both Brooks Koepka AND Dustin Johnson, so I don't think that they cared which of them won the U.S. Open.
