International Champions Cup Matches In Southern California

Post by steveogolf » Tue Jun 05, 2018 7:52 pm

July 25 = AC Milan vs. Manchester United at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
July 28 = FC Barcelona vs. Tottenham Hotspur at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

They have started advertising locally regarding these matches.
Are they "non-events" or are they matches that the teams really want to win?

No they are definitively worth going to watch...its pre season stuff aimed at brand building in shithole countries (America for example)

You'll see all the top stars...i wouldn'tbother with Barcelona or Tottenham but the Man Utd game is defo worth a watch.

My bet is that most of the fans in the Rose Bowl for BOTH of those matches will be speaking Mexican or Latin American Spanish, and that very little English will be heard in the stands.
No, I won't be going.
By the way, the ticket prices I see on-line are very expensive.

My big spectator event for the summer will be spending 6 days at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship being played this year at the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links in Northern California (Mid-August). I've already booked accommodations.

If you are a football [soccer] fan in that area and you are starved for top flight action, you will be going for sure!!!

Just like we would go along to Barca-Spurs game down here if we had the chance.

Just like the time when the Olympic stadium was filled when the the LA played here with Beckham, big name teams or big name players always going to attract big crowds to places that don't see them often.

Barcelona has one of the greatest players of all time- Lionel Messi.

Go see that match, just to say you saw it, Steve.

Even as a West Ham fan, I'd say go watch the Yids play Barcelona.

I thought that for these summer (actually meaningless) matches the top players for the teams often do not come.

Oh yeah the World Cup May influence who plays. Guaranteed to be packed with both English expats and touring supporters. I think you underestimate the passion that the English have for the game, Steve.

Perhaps.
If it was a match that really meant something then I would assume that tens of thousands of Brits would come to watch, but it's not a match of any real significance.

It's not the Brits you have to worry about. It's the Mexicans.

Tomorrow night it's Tottenham vs. Barcelona at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, but just as I suspected last month, MESSI will NOT be playing in any of the matches in the U.S.A. As I thought, it will be just a crap non-event without the best playing.

The Rose Bowl is a PITA.

But 90,000 does not a non-event make.

90,000 stupids who won't be seeing a real match. I doubt that there will be anywhere near 90,000 fans. If there are I bet that they don't know that Messi won't be playing OR they purchased tickets before it was announced that he would not be playing (the tickets have been on sale for over 6 weeks, and they are still advertising tickets for sale).

Final Results on July 28, 2018: Barcelona 2 Without Messi, Tottenham 2 (Barcelona wins 5-3 in the shootout).
Rose Bowl attendance for the non-event was 66,805. Approximately 25,000 empty seats.

Tottenham's old stadium held 36,000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Hart_Lane

Their new stadium, still being built, will hold 62,000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tottenham_Hotspur_Stadium

In short, it is the most fans they will see all year. Nobody cares about the Spurs.

OTOH, Liverpool and Manchester United drew 101,000 in Ann Arbor, which is also the most fans either team will see all year. Real Madrid and Manchester United drew 109,000 there in 2014.

What are you talking about?

Spurs arguable have played the most attractive football the past 3 seasons.

From a West Ham fan.

Based on fan attendance and team profits perhaps all of the Premier League teams should relocate to the United States. LOL

Their international profile pales in comparison to United, Liverpool, Chelsea and City. And the Baggies! (humour)
