Golf: THE MASTERS At Augusta National G.C. (April 5-8, 2018)

Post by steveogolf » Tue Apr 03, 2018 7:09 pm

It's The Masters which starts on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. Sergio Garcia is the defending champion.
Four time champion, Tiger Woods, is in the field for the first time in several years. Tiger has an unbelievable record at The Masters as a professional.
Updated Odds:
Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, & Justin Thomas: 10-1
Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Rose: 12-1
Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson: 16-1
Jason Day: 18-1
John Rahm and Paul Casey: 20-1
Sergio Garcia, Hideki Matsuyama, Henrik Stenson, & Tommy Fleetwood: 30-1.

My Pick: Justin Thomas to win The Masters.
Longshot Pick: Amateur Joaquim Niemann of Chile.
Steveo is my name, and golf is my game.

Man, I feel old when I see Jack Nicklaus' grandson make a hole in one during the par 3 contest.

Given his latest form i'd suggest Rory should not be any were near 12 to 1, more like 1200 to 1!!!

I mean he can't even make the cut these days in 2nd rate tournaments.

The Masters this year to my thinking is harder to pick, because there are so many good golfers in good from, but being a dyed in the wool Aussie i would have to go for Jason Day, with my outsider is Mark Leishmann, who is paired with Tiger on the 1st day.

And can Tiger win it?

I don't think he can, but i kinda hope that i am wrong.

If Jed doesn't think Rory has much of a chance those odds might be worth a bet!

It is tough to pick this year. But Jordan Spieth is the man to beat.

Look at the Rory's recent overall perfomances, they aren't great are they?

The guy has failed to make the cut in several 2nd grade events of late, over all i don't rate him as a real chance as he is far, far to hot and cold.

The way i see it he should be 12 to 1 to make the cut!!

Yeah Kuchar is one of Mickelson's tips, and he in speaking about the Masters he makes the point that so many good golfers are in good form at the mo', and it is going to be even harder hard to pick this year.

And i do have a bet on the Masters, but i must admit i did look at the chances this year and i did look at them untill my head hurt, and ended up not having a bet!!

And we're off.

The TV schedule sucks, even with the golf channel. But a lot is available on the Master's website.

Betting on someone winning a golf tournament is just throwing your money away.

You're better off punting a score on an outside bet at the nags.

We have a pool for all four majors combined. You have to pick 10 players using only a certain amount of points or less. And the points are based on the current April world rankings- for all four tournaments. Basically, you're allowed two hot players, four good players, and four crap players.

The team that wins the most money wins half the pool. The team that wins each major wins 12.5% of the pool.

It's about 85% luck, but it's fun. There is about $1000 in play with a $50 buy in.

A good start for Leishman & Stenson: Both are at the top at - 4 well into the Back Nine in Round # 1.
Tiger Woods is + 2 after 15 holes of Round 1. He didn't birdie any of the four Par 5 holes -- you aren't going to score well without making birdies (or eagles) on the Par 5's.

That was a 13 by Sergio on the Par 5 Fifteenth Hole that took him from 2 over par to 10 over par and put him second to last on the leaderboard. I have never seen a single hole score that high.

In the 1960's Arnold Palmer had a 12 on the Par 5 Ninth Hole in the Los Angeles Open at Rancho Park Golf Course (After hitting a good drive he proceeded to hit 2 balls into the driving range on the right, 2 balls onto Patricia Avenue on the left, and then put his 10th shot on the green and 2 putted). Arnold also had a 9 on the Par 3 Seventeenth Hole at Pebble Beach in the Bing Crosby -- he was in the rocks on the beach behind the green, and messed up bad.

Sounds good.

I would have a golf bet, like each way in horse racing, with say 5 finishing in the top 10

Woods would still be on my list in the Masters!

The way things have started i may have been very wrong about Rory, but correct about Leishman!!

But there is a long way to go.

A real dramatic day at the Masters, and it does beg the question is there any golf course in the world that lends itself to theatre the way Augusta does?

Woods is on everybody's list because he is excellent value this year. He has the fifth lowest average score on tour this year; yet his world rankings are abysmal, so he is cheap. That means he is a wash.

Anyway the format is new this year to get higher payouts with fewer winners and more losers. I think I like the normal layout with 30% for 1st, 20% for second, 10% for third, and 10% for each winner. In any event, the person who can pick two winners almost always cleans up because the tournament payoffs drop off so quickly after the winner.

There is a huge 'cost' difference between the #1 in the world and some schlub who can win, maybe. So Tiger was chosen less often when he was killing it than he is this year.

Every tournament player has a budget. And Tiger back then was twice as expensive as the #2 player on earth.

When half the field is as shitty as me, nobody cares.

But the tournament directors know this and ask for a 10-stroke limit when they schedule our tournament.

I used to shoot in the low hundreds or high 90s. Glory days. I maxed at 92.

I played golf with some of my tennis teammates and with their pace of play (slow), all this convoluted betting (took forever to go over where we were at on each tee box), and the friggin' heat, I couldn't handle making the turn--I left after nine. Didn't walk off in a huff or anything, just made some excuse that I had another obligation in the day that looks like I may be late for if I play the back nine.

Like my former neighbor across the street and I use to say when we made up a foursome; we may not be good, but we're fast.

Yeah, slow play pisses me off. Golf should be played in 4 hours. If you can't manage that, fuck off, go to a driving range.

Some of my worst rounds are when I'm initially playing well off the tee, and then get totally bogged down (meaning waiting what seems like forever) to hit my second or approach shot to the green. Then everything else starts to fall apart. Then I hate, hate, hate playing with members in a group who take forever to address the fucking ball, start to put us behind, and then I'm feeling rushed to make up for the fucker who is taking so long. When I get those with some people I play semi-regularly with, I'm like, okay, who else is playing...oh...okay...nah, I have something else going.

I've had some really solid rounds (meaning mid- to high-80s' for me nowadays) playing out in the middle of Montana or Wyoming, by myself, with a cart and doing the round in like 2 1/2 hours. The only drag is I can't have someone else see that awesome 5-iron shot from the fairway to green where I'm putting for birdie; no, I swear, it really did happen. Honest!

Woods and Lefty went backwards, and barely made the cut.

You've never heard of Patrick Reed? Sheesh

Man, I'd love to play Augusta some day. Probably shoot a 120 but so what.

Reed made eagles today on each of the par 5's on the back nine of Augusta. He's in the zone.

I don't know, he had two bogeys too. Hate to say it, but he's going to falter tomorrow. Not saying I want Rory to win, but would like to see Rickie do it.

Some very low scores by the leaders on Saturday, but I think the course will play harder in round # 4 so that scores will be close to par even for the leaders. It's going to be Patrick Reed or Rory McIlroy to win -- I think that Reed will win because he is great under pressure like he did in the Ryder Cup. They call him "Bulldog".

Speith is on a serious roll on Sunday. This would be an epic comeback.
