Baseball Talk 2018

Post by Annotated » Wed Mar 28, 2018 8:03 pm

So, tomorrow is Opening Day for the 2018 baseball season.

Every team will play tomorrow -- the first time every team has had the same opening day since 1968.

Some of the bigger off-season news items:

1. Giancarlo Stanton (last year's NL MVP) was traded from the Marlins to the Yankees. Stanton (6'6" 59 HRs) will now be teamed with Aaron Judge (6'7" 52 HRs).

2. In addition to getting rid of Stanton, Derek Jeter got rid of everyone else who was worth anything on the team, completely dismantling them (yet again).

3. The "Japanese Babe Ruth" (Shohei Otani), a kid who can throw 100 mph and hit balls 450 feet, was signed by the Angels. He will try to both pitch and hit (mostly likely as a DH). In Spring Training, he did neither very well.

4. Jose Altuve signed a 5-year extension with the Astros for $151 million.

Top Free Agent Moves by Ranking:

1. Shohei Ohtani ... from: Japan ... to: Angels

2. JD Martinez ... from: Arizona ... to: Red Sox

3. Yu Darvish ... from: Dodgers ... to: Cubs

4. Lorenzo Cain ... from: Royals ... to: Padres

5. Jake Arrieta ... from: Cubs ... to: Phillies

All free agent moves: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb- ... -for-2018/

Play ball, bitches.

Pity there isn't a stew fantasy league.

Y'all could lose three seasons in a row to a hippy.

That'd make me happier than winning two straight.

Yu had to leave after the shit show he delivered last year in the WS.

In the AL it's the Yanks over Leaveland, though I do wish the best for the Indians' manager. He lives in Tucson and sits courtside at the Cats games.

In the NL it's the Cubs over the Dodgers.

Yankees in the WS.

There really weren’t many free agent signings. The days of veterans cashing in are done. I maybe more excited by next year when bo bichette and vlad Guerrero jr are starting for the jays. This year’s team is just meh

Done?

Wait till next year when Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Josh Donaldson, and possibly Clayton Kershaw are available (he can opt out of his current contract).

The pregame ceremony honouring Roy Halladay by the Jays was pretty classy.

Of course Giancarlo Stanton's 1st hit as a Yankee was a 2 run homer.

Ohtani gets a hit. Forget if it was his first at bad. There's been talk of him being a bust and getting sent down to Triple A.

Stanton gets a homer in his first Yankees at bat.

And the first pitch of the first at bat of the first inning of the first game of the season is a home run.

Well, the Orioles had a nice 11th inning walk-off home run to win their opener, although they should have had it won in 9. A few bad breaks that weren't really anybody's fault cost them.

Anyway, that's the 3rd opening day in a row that they've had a walk-off win. Last year's was a home run too. The year before that was just a hit.

I ended up watching a fair amount of the Dodgers vs. Giants game yesterday.

I don't really like it when football has rivalry games to open the season, but it seems all right in baseball. Maybe because you know there are a lot more to come.

Supposedly there were only 974 people at the Rays/White Sox game last night.

Two bad teams + bad weather.

That said, the White Sox have one of the better farm systems, and they may be looking like the Astros in a few years.

Well, it looks like the Japanese Babe Ruth, Shohei Otani, has gotten off to a super hot start after a super shitty spring.

Pitching, he's 2-0, 2.08 ERA, 13 innings pitched, 18 strike outs, and a 0.46 WHIP.

Batting, he has a .346 average, a .414 on base percentage, 3 HRs, and 11 RBIs in 26 ABs.

They call him ShoTime (after Shohei).

Must be fun to be an Angels fan these days.

Well it's now no longer April and Los Doyers seem to be floundering. 5 straight division titles might be the end of the streak. Seager's gone for the season, Taylor isn't the same as last year, Kershaw doesn't look like Kershaw now that even more pressure is on his starts, the manager's trying to send a message by benching players for not stretching doubles into triples, Jansen is blowing saves like he did in the World Series, and the best players are Kemp and Grandal, who were supposedly being moved in the offseason.

But it's only May.

There is talk about trading for Machado to replace Seager. The dodgers are fine at third once Sellers comes back. Can Machado play short? Did he start out there?

Machado is currently playing short this season, and he came up through the minors as a shortstop.

He's a decent shortstop, but he's a Hall of Fame third baseman.

He'd rather play short, however, and so that's why he's currently playing it. The Orioles are trying to placate him. This is one reason the Orioles suck this year. Not because Machado is bad at short, but because they have lost their team first mojo. They may end up tearing it all down very soon, and Machado would certainly be on the trading block.

Ichiro is retiring as a player, effective yesterday. He arrived aged 27 in 2001 and got 3089 hits in MLB and 4367 total- the most ever.

He was a joy to watch, and he was excellent at defense as well.

I still remember Rob Dibble having to get Ichiro's name tattooed on his ass because he made a bet that Ichiro wouldn't led the league in hitting his first year.

3,000 hits + 600 HRs. Only Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Arod have also done that.

Congrats to puljos, im not much of a baseball fan, but anytime he was up to bat for the cardinals it was must watch stuff.
As nice as it would of been for him to stay in the stl for his career, the best thing the cardinals did was not pay him, even though they did try, it would of cost them Everything.
Wonder how old he really is?

Ichiro was amazing. I doubt many here watched him in his prime, but he was awesome. Luckily, every Mariners game is broadcast locally.

Seattle lost A-Rod and the Big Unit, so they were supposed to suck. In comes Ichiro and they won the most games in history- 116 in 2001. I watched most from my boss's trailer from a remote site that summer.

Pitchers got so sick of him they would throw junk into the dirt. And he would golf a hit off of them. And then he would pick off runners from the outfield.

He's a unanimous first round HOF.

I can bat 0.157 for $22,000,000 per year.

Please tell the Orioles and we can make a win/win deal to swap me for Chris Davis and his $23M contract.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-slugge ... 1531085328
When the Baltimore Orioles signed first baseman Chris Davis to a seven-year, $161 million contract in 2016, they thought they were paying for one of baseball’s premier sluggers. What they have instead is, by some measures, a player on track to have the worst single season in the history of the sport.

Let’s start with something simple: batting average. After Sunday’s 1-for-4 effort, Davis is hitting .157. No player who qualified for the batting title since 1900 has ever hit below .179, an ignominious honor that belongs to Rob Deer with the 1991 Detroit Tigers and Dan Uggla of the 2013 Atlanta Braves.

As for Davis, despite appearing in 73 of the Orioles’ 89 contests, he has scored just 16 runs, which would put him on pace for 29, or .18 per team game. That puts him in the territory of Mario Guerrero, who scored 27 runs for the 1978 Oakland Athletics despite compiling 546 plate appearances.

Then there’s the matter of wins above replacement, or WAR, a popular metric in the analytics community designed to measure a player’s total value. By that measure, Davis is on pace to finish 2018 at around minus-4, or four wins worse than a typical Triple-A call-up, according to Baseball-Reference. That’s only happened once ever: Jerry Royster had a minus-4 WAR for the Atlanta Braves in 1977, hitting .216 in 445 at-bats and committing 28 errors between shortstop, second base and third base.

In reality, these records are difficult to break, because teams rarely allow players struggling this badly to stay on the field. But the Orioles have the worst record in the majors. When it comes to Davis, they really don’t have anything to lose.
