NHL Hockey Season 2017/18

Post by eric84 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 6:42 pm

Well, the season got underway yesterday and I was at the Jets-Leafs game. Not as many Leaf fans as previous games as a lot of season ticket holders held onto to the season opening game. Alas, after the first 10 minutes when the Jets dominated but couldn't score, the Leafs took over and torched them 7-2. The place went funereal pretty damn quick.

In other news, Connor McDavid looks unreal with that speed and puck handling, making the Flames look bad. An Oilers-Leafs final would be fun.

Was at the Canucks/Oilers pre-season last Sat. Yep, McDavid is unreal.

Way less people at the arena than in the past. But I actually don't think that's a bad thing. Ticket prices now have 12 different levels (I think previously it was 4) so there's a lot more incentive to go to the game for the real fans rather than corporate tickets. I can tell you that in our section (lower bowl, but second to last row back), people were into it. People I'd say were true fans.

Are the Canucks going to sell-out like they used to? Doubt it. But now the organization is working to get bums in seats, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

After selling out every game since the Jets returned, there were a few empty seats for weekday games last year especially when the Jets were pretty much out of the playoff picture. There'll be serious grumbling if the Jets don't get to the playoffs this year.

The jets finally offered mini game packs though I found the packages overpriced for games they suspect they'll have trouble filling the seats. Fortunate to find a season ticket holder to sell me tix for 3 games I wanted to see. I think there are 6-7 price categories at MTS centre though because it's small (15k capacity) there's not many bad places to watch.

Fun fact for tonight: first Australian born player in the NHL will play tonight for the Washington Capitals, Nathan Walker. Played in the Czech league and the USHL and now living every Aussie boy's dream.

At the beginning of the season I bet 7.50 on the over/under total points for the season on every team, cost me $232.50. I went 21 - 10 and am up $54.55. A couple of teams went down to their last 2 or 3 games.

Yes, but did you put any money on a Vegas Golden Night stanley cup win?

I did not, I did put 7.50 on them to get over 68.5 points, they crushed that one.

I wanted to put down $25/game, but I didn't have enough money at the time. I basically did it to make watching the regular season more interesting.

I'm hoping the playoff pool will make up for my terrible regular season performance, not making the playoffs for the second year in a row. I blame my terrible goaltending.

My predictions for the 1st round of the playoffs are as follows:

Washington over Columbus
Philadelphia over Pittsburgh
Tampa Bay over New Jersey
Boston over Toronto
Nashville over Colorado
Minnesota over Winnipeg
LA over Las Vegas
Anaheim over San Jose

I can't see the Jets losing to the Wild. No way Philly beats the Pens, not with their awful goaltending.

The Flyers point total look better than their actual record. Thy have a the most OTL's in the NHL, including 2 against the pens. tat means that they do not know how to finish off close games.

Yup, no shootouts in the playoffs. Flyers did well to make the playoffs but the Pens have won back to back cups.

After game 1, and the 1st 5 - 10 minutes of game 2, the Pens are 100% going to the Conference Final. Philadelphia, Washington, or Columbus won't beat them, maybe Boston or Tampa, but that's it.

In other news the NHL cemented it's change from National Hockey League to GMHL the Girly Man Hockey League by suspenging Kadro for 3 games in the playoffs.

I personally have no use for Kadri but the 'offence' was minor at best FFS it's hockey not croquet

"I think as a game, as a league, as players, that's the stuff we don't want in our game."

Said the sniveling asswipe who took a minor hit-I feel like throwing up FFS.

Neither is Boston playing like the team they once were-Toronto is better than ever but still just average.

Sad to hear Jim Hughson playing the role of 'homer' instead of professional sports announcer-sadder yet that he thinks he has to and thus debase the tradition.

I saw a story about him, saying he wasn't given a playoff assignment without explanation. Seems a shabbby way to treat him after all these years.

The CBC would've been too scared of the backlash not to give him an assignment. Kudos to Rogers for making that decision. Now only if they would do that to that pompous obnoxious windbag Don Cherry.
