Someone on another site has told AJ*** that we're crowdfunding a hitman to kill him. He seems to believe it.
This is scary. Who has done that?

AJ has looked at the LinkedIn profiles of several of us; the man is unwell and I believes that if he's "under attack," he has the right to go after people.

I really do want to know the answer to this. How are posters discovering our real names when this site is allegedly anonymous?

The site is anonymous, but people meet each other and share names, and many are friends on Facebook.

No, I don't know whether he's on FB. Other people found out Stewbies' names, I'm guessing via FB and other social media, and shared them with each other.

Joe's shared his name on the Stew (he has linked to articles he's written), but I don't know whether others shared their own names directly with him.

I can't say I blame you missie. I think you are more careful about your identity than most here.

It really is a leap of faith meeting people from here. I've met quite a few, and most are great, but who knows... we're all one or two arguments from weirdness, maybe.

I've attracted verbally violent leg humpers since I first started to type back on thorntree in 2003, though for varying reasons over the years. Condensed reason: vocal and opinionated female.

I'm less concerned for myself than for people who know and love me.

And you're right, it only takes one.

Who is the motherfucker handing out real names? If I ever do meet anyone here, I'm wearing the niqab and will be addressed only as Lulu.

There is a poster who has since disappeared that named a lot of names on another board during the stew fail in January.

This I heard about, but did not witness.

Lulu, there is a twisted individual who used to troll on YC years ago. He started out semi-normal and had pals on the board. When his psychotic nature came out he managed to use facebook to figure out a lot of people's real names - not sure how it started, possibly with pole he PMed with before his true nature emerged.

His schtick was posting people's real names and workplaces. It always got deleted and he was banned on site, but it happened a lot.

He shared a bunch of those real names with AJ and Bashtard and Jellybelly and whoever else over on the shadow stew a few months ago.

If you don’t want people to know your real name don’t share it with anyone here. Simple.

There is also a thorn tree Facebook group where people post their handles so it’s not very hard to find things out if you’re a member.

Having met quite a few people from here, I still tend to think of them as their handles rather than names. I only really know full names of the handful I'm friends with on FB.

far as i know, there are only 4 posters here who know my real name, and 3 of them i gave it to -- via either email or Facebook. (actually, come to think of it, one those 3 probably doesnt even know my last name, even though we have met several times.) the 4th is someone who found me on a dating website years ago, without my guidance.

nevertheless, i totally trust all these 4 posters' intentions, and i think it is difficult to make solid rules about anonymity. sometimes people who are the most fearful of being found create their own bad situations, imo.

I don't know what anybody could do to try to harm me even with my name. I suppose they could lie, but those who do that are usually found out, as well as lying about things nobody cares about. If somebody contacted my clients then the client would correctly think they're a batshit weirdo. Family would be confused or not care, depending on the person. What is it people think these guys can do?

I wouldn't want to be at a piss-up with any of the elite group named above of course, but only because they're annoying. In the case of the one I've met for example, he disrupts others having a normal conversation, much as he does online.

"What is it people think these guys can do?"

I mean how far up their own arse can someone be?

How patronising.

I imagine that unless online stalking has happened to yourself then you have no idea what you are talking about and should keep your mouth shut.

And if it has happened to you, and you weren't bothered, then bully for you.

Cyberstalking is a real nasty thing, particularly for women. Surprised in this day and age anyone would minimize that.
