Paper clips

Post by mishmish » Sat Mar 03, 2018 4:53 am

What is the meaning of the paper clip that appears next to some thread titles? Inquiring minds need to know.

It means an image has been attached to a post in the thread (as opposed to externally linking to an image).

I'm not sure why they think it's necessary though.

Pffft the paper clip isn't even visible in phone mode. Sooo, what mutha said (apparently useless).

Graph bar means there is a poll in thread.

A couple of weeks ago I learned that the French call paper clips (at least those of the standard shape) trombones. Well done the French.

You also learned that Rod McKuen wrote the English lyrics for songs by Jacques Brel, did you not?

I knew that, but had forgotten it. Boxes of them, from suppliers, come with "trombones" stenciled on the box.

A paperclip is the only item I have added to my standard gear carried in my money belt in the past 20 years. Indispensable for changing SIM cards.

That was one of the delights of language immersion. A couple of days before beginning university study in France, I was shopping for school supplies. I needed paperclips, but didn't know the word, so used circumlocution with a clerk. She lit up, and said I was looking for trombones. I thought about it for a moment, and understood it when I thought of the shape.

I learned the same way LS did, from a bilingual label. God bless Canada.
