I guess he was mostly politics but he was a bit of everything: travel, linguistics, culture.

Is anyone in contact with his wife? A former stewbie wanted to pass his condolences.

Soda, you were fun to spar with, but I hope you went peacefully and with no pain. I'm truly sorry you were shortchanged on the remainder of your life. Rest easy, old interwebs "nemesis."

The Italian sausage is back!

Soda was one of the true characters on here, a favorite target of all regardless of political stripe. He had a deep knowledge of music. I remember the song below being one he talked about: "A teenage Rasputin takes the sting of a gin."

Did he get band?

So sad to hear this news. I don't have a lot of specific memories of him except that he was special part of the PS fabric, which now is weakened by his loss.

What shocking and sad news. Soda was great fun to interact with. He hadn't been around in a while, but he traveled so much and would pop in here or there. That's all I thought he was doing in his absence.

he must have REALLY been an original stewbie, because it seems he had established a reputation even before i came on board (just before PS was kicked off LP) and i don't really know much about him. was his username always soda? did he have other names here? i had thought sodelicious was the same poster, but apparently not.

always sad to read about death here.

I'm pretty saddened by his death. We did a lot of bickering here, and I'm especially now not proud of crossing certain lines with him. He was smart and unusual and tenacious.

korgy, he posted as Soda (2.0) and wordofmouth, the latter of which was the name of his company in Finland.

Ouch, Soda gone!? Just saw this, been on the road the last week.

Soda was a bit of an enigma; I'll leave it at that. He did help in coining, "First white man in..." Or at least some formation/transformation of the latter. I always felt Soda had a hell of a lot to offer; LP-TT and PS just always weren't those venues in which to explore what he had to offer. He was serious, sometimes too much so (my projection), and he also seem to cringe at the thought that someone might have beat him in getting to a part of the world he found interest in.

I'll give Soda this much (and of course a lot more), he beat me not so much to where we're going, but from where we're leaving, eventually.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Good to see see Marshall, Allan (Dallan), and Ian...sad it took Soda's demise for that to happen here.

As others have said, Soda had an incredible wealth of travel experience. He was one of the guys who could talk about almost anywhere on the planet. Cooch, thanks for the Word of Mouth link, was just browsing through some of Soda's blog entries there, and had a bit of a smile at one odd place that he had written about recently, a place where he and I have tread on the same ground, the Voodoo Fetish Market in Lome, Togo. That guy had been everywhere.

It is very, very sad indeed. Soda was quite interesting. He stayed in Israel for an extended period of time and even considered living there permanently. Therefore, his criticism of Israel in the days of the LP forum was difficult to understand. Yet, his criticism unlike others was never hateful or vicious. We just disagreed because from my perspective the Israeli actions were based on surviving in a very difficult neighborhood.

RIP!

I hope the Styx crossing was a painless one.

Wasn't Soda universally despised around here? Even after he was long gone, the very mention of his name would illicit a few catcalls. I guess death is not only final, but the final reprieve. Even the lamestream liberal media had a few nice things to say about Enoch Powell, Francisco Franco and Jerry Falwell after they embarked to the other side.

Haven't been on the Stew in a long, long while, other than the occasional brief visit to poke about, but I just saw this and had to post. Very unfortunate news. I always liked Soda, regardless of his clumsy political posturing and latent urge to get into feuds. He always came across as a nice guy in the end to me, and certainly someone that was curious about and appreciated the opportunity in getting to know the world at large. Something I could always relate to, I suppose. RIP.
