Soda.RIP.

Post by Bluedoglover » Thu Aug 27, 2015 9:49 pm

I just got a message on FB from Patrik to tell me, that he just found out Soda has died around the end of April. Since Soda had been a big part of the Stew for a long time, I thought I'd let the Stewers who knew him know.

Apparently he was diagnosed with cancer, which took him very quickly. He can't have been much older then 50. I met him at a pissup in Patrik's place. He was a nice guy with lots of interesting stories.

Soda hadn't posted much for some years but he was a central character and is involved in many of the older mega-threads. He was a mix of intelligent, entertaining, well traveled, with a dash of mischief - he was fun to post with.

He was extremely well traveled by Stew and LPTT standards. Always interesting.

Third Stewbie gone in the past ~year (Jono and Zaffer), but Al Bodine and Billet (Laura E) were gone before them. RIP all, good people.

If anyone knows the details of what kind of cancer he had, I'd be interested in hearing about it. RIP Soda.

So what's with the "Dave" jokes here? Was his real name "Dave", and was he the origin of the whole ongoing "dave" joke?

omg now that's a shock. wayy too young. i'd guess he was in his 40s. soda was a live one... used to really get folks frothing/thinking (as the case may be) around here. Meeting him and his lovely wife a couple of years ago forced me to to reacon with the fact that some perfectly sane, nice people are behind some very irritating stances bandied about here. so odd that so many loud and clear lynchpins of the stew have passed. has it really been so long? rip soda, and thanks for all the fish.

Damn, RIP Soda. and thoughts about those he's left behind.

I really haven't been here since those early days much and its from those days I still clearly remember Soda's comments being worth reading unlike so many, I remember Soda best thought from even further back on the LPTT; were I was more active. Life changes and is far too short. I think one of the only non-political LPTT threads I had directly with Soda was one of the long country list posts where the question of what should count as country visit, UN member etc. does just passing through the airport count (no, even if you go passport control - as I recall we agreed on) at the time I had a bit lower total than he - my number really haven't changed whereas its good to know he kept being out there. Full life of an interesting person that was far too short. Now I'll go back to mom's basement and contemplate shag carpet.

Its sort of an odd modern internet thing, were hearing months after the fact, about the passing of someone you'd never actually met and hadn't even had any BBS connection to in many years can emotionally affect you. Its not like other than reading his posts and maybe a few one off replies to a comment he made I had any direct interaction at all. I hadn't known about Billet, Jono, nor zaffer either just amplifying the effect.
