I thought he was doing better, too. I wish I had talked to him more often.

I've let Patrik know about Jono and he was devastated like we all are. He can't post here, because he is still banned, but he asked me to post this message in his name:

i have been chatting with jonno for over ten years. i met him once in real life. he was exactly the same as he was online, a genuine, caring, kind, intelligent and gentle person. i wish i could be more like jonno in many ways. im really devastated and shocked to learn of his passing.

I learned this sad news from a friend of a friend. Jono was a friendly and kind person, who will be missed by so many people. I doubt he would remember me because it's been so long since my days of posting here on the Stew, but I've thought about him a lot over the years.

One time back on Talk Politics, he posted something that was misunderstood and he received some criticism (only within the particular thread) for it. I'm sorry to say that I jumped up on the bandwagon, out of boredom more than anything else. I don't like that I ganged up on someone when my point was already being made by others, and I don't like that I did it because I was bored and not because of conviction. At any rate, handled the situation in true Jono form and his clarification of what he had meant showed that he just hadn't been understood correctly. He wouldn't have been wrong for holding a bit of a grudge, but that just wasn't in his vocabulary. I think about this a lot.

He had a rare knack for getting along with everyone, without becoming somewhat bland in the process. My condolences to all who knew and loved him.

not sure if there is a graceful way to say this-- but i'm sure i'm not the only one wondering what it would have been like for him to see all these posts and to hear what people have to say about him.

You're not the only one. I thought the same. I know it leads to a whole lot of 'what if's' and it isn't even necessarily logical. But I thought the same.

For Jono, I am not a religious person myself, but Jonathon was such a gentle person, and full of so many thoughts that all of us enjoyed hearing, reading, he will be missed. I hope his family finds some comfort in how much he was loved. And this lovely song is as close as I get to religion and afterlife. If anyone deserves afterlife, it is Jono.

Bugger bugger bugger..

So sorry to hear about this. We didn't always see eye to eye, but he was a nice man, all the way from back in the day on the tree. I nearly met him a few times, but we didn't manage it, and I regret that now. He is missed.

Maybe we can raise funds and make a donation to a charity that Jono supported, in his name, as a Stew gesture?

Justinian let me know about Jono's death this morning, just thought I'd chime in and add my voice to the chorus of sadness and support. I'm gutted. Depression sucks, as I know from personal experience. Hope ya'll have the support that you need, it's been a long time since I've been here, but I know you fine people come through when the chips are down. Take care.

Yes, as SG said, that is the only silver lining, "seeing" so many old faces. I just wish that Jono would have known what a positive impact he had on so many, how respected he was. Still, depression knows no boundaries and who knows if it would have made a difference.

There's a memorial service in Darwin tomorrow evening for Jono's friends who can't make it to his funeral. I fly to Darwin for work tonight, then i'm supposed to fly to work tomorrow on a charter. Depending if I can get aother charter, I might postphone my work flight by 24 hrs and go have a gin and a wine with Jono's friends. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to hear Jono has dozens upon dozens of online friends who also miss him very much.

Thanks Snow. *hugs*

Being back is a mixed bag for me. I'd like to go to the funeral for Jono. He was always very kind to me, and particularly when J died, and I had been looking forward to seeing him at a barbeque when he was back in Adelaide. Depends when it is of course as I'm having an Aussie spreading of the ashes and wake for J soon too.

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. Jono was a gentleman and a genuinely nice person. Those attributes shined through on this forum and you could see why so many people respected him.

He was a good man.

This type of news is so difficult to accept, feels like a punch in the gut. I'm devastated to learn that this good man lived in so much pain.

The tributes here are very moving, a fitting testament to Jono's decency.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends, and may he rest in peace.

This is very sad. Jono was always nice - polite and laid-back and unruffled, which is quite an achievement on a 'lively' place like this. I never saw him be mean to anyone here, nor anyone be mean to him in return; I think everyone respected him. Condolences to his family, and rest in peace now, Jono.

Equus just let me know.

I am devastated. Although I never met Jono in person we communicated publicly and privately for more than a decade. Jono was one of the most genuine, decent and generous people I have ever "met" I feel I know him pretty well although we hadn't communicated for several months. I feel this as a personal loss and am absolutely devastated.

Equus also told me about Purplegemini's husband. Purps I am so sorry to hear this I can't imagine how tough this must have been and I am thinking of you. I hope you are looking after yourself and doing ok.

Hello my old friend, your family must be getting tall now!

I got a welcoming PM yesterday from an old friend here, and I haven't been around here for a year. When I went to PMs to read the new one I discovered my last three PMs received before I left were all from Jono. I don't think I'll be able to reread them for a while

Gutted reading this. He was one of the nicest on here as others have said. We exchanged PMs on a couple of occasions, never met him, but I knew him as far as it's possible on here. It's a real shame that (presumably) he succumbed to his demons.
