one thing that i did find surprising is how readily muslims divorce.
If anything they are a lot more pragmatic about the whole situation. That was soemthign that really bothered me in my divorce.
I honestly thought it was going to be for good and last forever.
Many people just don't go into relationships with that attitude, and that may be the most wise way to think of it.
Nothing on this planet is forever, so why would you think relationships are?

Take my ex -- she was miserable with me -- so why should she stay?
To be miserable longer?
She got out and now I finally understand why.
It was as simple as she wasn't happy.

That took me a long time to deal with.

When somebody wants out, there's no reason to stay.
So, I agree with the muslims.
I also like their burial customs -- bury them by sundown.
That just makes more sense and incorporates the facts of human nature and that the the body will begin to smell in a few hours in the heat.

Muslim Men divorce far more easily than Muslim women. Open your eyes Joe.

And muslim divorce is a matter of Sharia law... so you'd have to go through that if you wanted out.

I believe you would both be surprised how readily muslims divorce and how each individual looks at divorce.

They aint' all the same you know.
A girl I know I teach with is 26 yo, somali in ethnicity but a UK citizen from London.
She's now going through her 3rd divorce.
No big sweat and no sharia or mullahs involved.
Her husband is from Ethiopia and they are just going through the legal aspect back in England.
For the past 5 months she's been living with another muslim lecturer I work with who is from Egypt.
Her and I go out for drinks about once a week.
They're just people who struggle with their faith like most christuians do.

She's educated and has many opportunites and has a completely differnt life than the young upper class omani girs I teach.

You Liberals are always looking for some type of fairness or utopia on this planet, and that's where you get messed up.
Nothing in life is fair.
Absolutely nothing.
More laws will not change that.

X:
You do realize when you wrote "Muslim Men divorce far more easily than Muslim women."that there is quite a bit of varience in the lives of people who follow islam?

As an example, the experience of a 55 year old divorced female shop owner in cairo with an annual income of $100,000US is going to be fundamentally different than a 22 year old Indonesia female with three children married to a subsistence fisherman living in Karanggayam?

I think if you would 'open your eyes" and actually visit different areas where muslims live it would surprise you how varied their lives are.
Women are not always the "oppressed minorities" you beleive them to be in islamic societies.

The question for you, then, is how empowered do you think a 19 year old traditional Bedoin girl will be in that sliding scale? And is it really a good omen for a marriage if your primary topic of discussion in pondering the marriage is a) your ego being stroked followed by b) how easy divorce is...

Are you this nasty to everyone you meet in life or just to me?
So, in the angry spirit in which you made your statements, let me ask you this:

"The question for you, then, is.."

Why would you care if a man you have never met and whom you clearly dispise receives a marriage proposal from a young woman you have never met?

The only answer I can logically come up with is in some way it bothers you that a young female is interested in me.

I am absolutey sure it isn't in the "Ya Ya sisterhood" mode of trying to protect another vulnerable female from a predatory male, as I am sure if you walked the streets of your nearest town you could find a female who might actually benefit from your advice, instead of a young woman living in a tent in a desert you will never visit who appears to be attracted to an older man that's been spending time with her father, uncle and brother in pursuit of tribally sanctioned activities.

Wow.
All I can say is-- wow.

The sheer ignorance displayed on this thread is almost astounding.

You all have had so little experience with muslims and bedu that you actually think that the female has no say in whom the girl marries.

Let me educate you after having been associated with approximately 12 seperate tribes of bedu in Egypt, KSA, Oman and Jordan: The girl does have the final say in the choice of the marriage mate.
You all really should travel a bit more in the ME before you start lecturing people on islamic marriage customs...

You all have had so little experience with muslims and bedu

As opposed to you, who chose to violate their tradion and take a photo of woman with her face uncovered?

The girl does have the final say in the choice of the marriage mate.

somehow I find that very doubtful in traditional families, just like it is doubtful that you won your host's affection with out photo antics

You all really should travel a bit more

Here's what I find so comical about you all:

You tell me what the customs are in a country you've never been to, make wild accusations about marriage customs with people who follow a religion that you only know from television and second-hand stories, with tribal groups you have no experience with, and then state what the intentions are of a man and woman you have never met are.

What is so pathetic is you actually think you have superior undertanding of the people that live in the country where I do live, in a nation whose government I work for and whose young adults I teach, with a language you have none of and which at least I can make my basic requests known, in a region I've had several years experience in traveling, teaching and publishing on, with people who follow a religion and with whom I will be drinking beer with in about 10 minutes, when I hunt with a tribe that lets no outsiders I've ever heard of hunt with them in traditional hunting areas, and whose daughter has now experessed an interest in me marrying into the band.

Yeah, your Liberal "innate understanding" and "cultural sensitivity" really lets you comprehend the people I know and you have never met better than I do.

Classic Liberals, every one of you.

You are all so stupid you think you're smart, which is the dumbest of stupid in my experience.

I enjoy your photos and stories, Joe. Being from central TX I'm more at home around beaches and lakes than desert, but I can certainly see it has its own unique appeal. I have lots of fond memories of west TX, especially hiking and camping Big Bend with my dad.

You are mulling how to respond to a proposal of marriage with a teen-aged woman thirty-four years younger who looks at you with that expression?

Foresee many happy moments, do you?

Image

The look on Faheem's face, what does that say to you? "Welcome to our family" or "What is this ignorant American doing now?"

Goats, Joe, photos of goats. Yeah, ol Joe kinda pulled a fast one..

I don't think the issue is people lecturing you on what the cultural dimensions are or what this family might expect of marriage so much as worrying that you aren't thinking about it, joe... You do come away giving the impression that marring a Bedouin teenager would be such a great story to add to you colection of great stories and wouldn't that be fun and cool!

This is perhaps something you might want to reflect on before you get further into these negotiations and potentially mess up your life, never mind her life...

joe, seriously: when you start to take a picture of someone and they do not smile but cover their face...what part of this do you not understand? i'm not dissing you here, but the pics you've entered into evidence strongly tend to convict you. here, you just get laughed at, but the same offense in other places, under local laws, may result in forfeiture of your family jewels, or more. many of us here know that, from experience in such regions, especially including muslim regions. why don't you get it? are you one of, are you proud of being one of, those 'ugly americans' that make the world a worse and more dangerous place not just for the next americanst to traipse thru the areas of your errors, but even of americans living at home, a la 9-11?

joe, are you an 'ugly american'?

i'm not trolling you, not kidding around. why do you intrude on people in their home and take pics of them they don't want you to take? did you grow up having strangers intrude into your house and take pics when you were trying to ignore them, when your parents were trying to shoo them away? if so, then perhaps your behavior here is understandable.

joe, do you understand that such actions make the world a worse place for the people you intrude upon, and also for other people, including americans?

seriously awaiting your response,

q

The whole setting was quite romantic to be honest -- the desert; lamiah casting glances at me in the candlight with her face partially veiled; the aged uncle; the wind rustling the sides of the tent throughout the night; the occasional bellow of a camel in the distance...

About the time I think I've seen everything life casts light on a new discovery of experience.

Have you discovered the experience of Faheem, his brother.. Lamiah's father, her brother, as they all express expressly what the fuck you are on about?

Photos?

You are all so stupid you think you're smart, which is the dumbest of stupid in my experience.

Well I don't agree. I think they ARE good questions, and deserve a reasoned response. But I had no expectations whatsoever right from the begging that there was any prospect of that. We COULD be getting interesting insights into this family. We aren't.

i wasn't saying they're not good questions, just that i don't expect much in answer. if someone posted rape pics and asked 'oh, c'mon, you can tell she really liked it' that would be a damned sight worse, but in the same quadrant.

Well, after that tongue lashing I'm almost speechless... but not quite.
Anyway, here's a few answers...

Godjira: It looks like it's over between me and shoko. We talked a short time again yesterday and, well, she's "moved on". I never did have much luck with long distance relationships, and she is young and pretty, so that's the end of that story.
To be honest it was moving a bit too fast. We were already talking about getting married on our second date and after intimacy I always felt I had to do the honorable thing. I am a bit traditional in my own way you know. I feel relieved to be honest and she appears to be too.
She was and is a sweet girl, so much fun to kiss and her legs felt kind of swollen when I held her, which is a phenomenon I've only noted in women under about 27. I think they start loosing muscle mass in their upper legs after that age so they don't feel quite the same.
Shoko was the first girl after my ex that I've felt "it" with. Linda perez, the early 40s school teacher form ft lauderdale who keeps writing me jsut dosen't have the same effect on me as did shoko. She's nice though, and I do like talking history and hispanic culture with linda.
So, I am prepared to be chastised by all females and all Liberal males when I state again: I jsut simply prefer younger women. Not that I can get them that often, but I gotta be honest, I just enjoy the company of younger women, which is one of the reasons I like teaching at a university.
Immature?
Ridiculous for an older man to prefer pre- middle aged women?
Unfair?
Shallow?
Yes, yes, and yes. But that is the fact of the matter old joe.

Am I going to marry lamaiah?
No.
Did I entertain the idea?
Yes, but if you had spent any time at all with these people you'd understand they cannot leave their people and home -- it might just kill her.

She is beautiful, but I noticed one man said she was ugly.
Some people do not like the "unibrow" look, but I actually appreciate it since I got to understand its significance in islamic thought.
Trimming eyebrows is, while not haram, not encouraged among young people becasue it is like wearing makeup and short dresses.
Think of conservative muslims as a bit like the amish. They like their clothing to be simple as well as hairstyles, beards untrimmed etc as to do so is invite vanity.
So, for a young woman like Lamiah to have large eybrows is actually a symbol of piety and displays faithfulness to the Lord.

That was another reason she reminds me of Ruth from the Old Testament.

But you all look at, and I believe even see, people of faith, whether Christian or Muslim, different than I do.
As Liberals you see them (us?), and people like junabi as objects of ridicule.

I see a girl like Lamiah as the flower of the Lord's creation upon the earth.

Ridiculous for an older man to prefer pre- middle aged women?
Unfair?
Shallow?
Yes, yes, and yes. But that is the fact of the matter old joe.

.....

But you all look at, and I believe even see, people of faith, whether Christian or Muslim, different than I do.
As Liberals you see them (us?), and people like junabi as objects of ridicule.

I see a girl like Lamiah as the flower of the Lord's creation upon the earth.

oh dear. by 'us', joe, you may be correct if you mean 'liberals' (and other sensible folk) see immature, ridiculous, unfair, shallow people as 'objects of ridicule.'

now, about seeing 'a girl like lamiah as the flower of the lord's creation upon the earth.' well, isn't that...special?

how do you think she really sees you ? (hint: one of your pics is quite telling)

The Lord loves it when 55 year old men take secret photos of women 35 years younger!

I'm no theologian, but that's got to be worse than being gay by God's standards.

Last night when Lamiah served me the lamb, she put her hand under the tray and squeezed my hand for just a moment.

Later in the night, as I sat drinking tea talking with faheen and the women were on the other side of the tent, she lifted her scarf up while she gazed at me so I could see what she looked like uncovered.

She really is a lovely girl.
This whole experience with the junabi and lamiah is very... surreal.

I post pictures of a remote tribe of bedu living near the border of Saudi Arabia who I hunt with on tribal land and who wish me to marry one of their daughters.

You post pictures of a cartoon.

In this life a man's activities and choices say more about him than anything else.
I know what mine say about me.

What do your activites say about you?

again, irony thick enough to plow. smells over-fertizlied, too.

joe, we actually know what your 'activities' say about you. taking unwanted pics of a girl that doesn't like you to show off on a mong board is really quite revealing. or were these stories actually about the goat you took in exchange for the girl? i'm certainly no authority on the customs there, but seems pretty paltry to me.

doubtless the ghost of the murdered desert fox trails you by night. sleep with one eye open.

The only thing I don't get here is why you would have to give up Shoko to marry Lamiah. Doesn't islam allow for 4 wives? Would Naziha, Shoko, and Lamiah all get on OK with each other?
