Image$hack Wants Money or El$e... (photos will disappear)

Post by pezworld » Sat Oct 17, 2015 12:50 am

First they stopped letting people post new photos for free, and now they're getting rid of content posted already for free unless we dig deep. Since I for one won't do that, old pics posted here are likely to disappear. Probably for many others as well.

Here's the email I received. I suppose it's their right to do that, but it's also my right to call them a$$holes. And if you want your Image$hack photos to still appear in threads, well, you're SOL I guess if you can't edit after the fact.

ImageShack Content delivery policy changes

Dear ImageShack users, since 2004 ImageShack’s team has been working
hard to create easiest to use, best performing Image Hosting and
delivery solution for all users. To continue to improve our services
for our premium users, ImageShack will implement policy changes that
are listed in detail below.

Starting November 1st, 2015 ImageShack will be implementing a new
policy that will affect image delivery for some of our users, here are
those changes:

Premium ImageShack accounts will not be affected in any way. You will
continue to be able to use your ImageShack account, and all images
will be served to your pages.

Any free accounts (non-premium) will no longer deliver images to any
sites, blogs or forums. This change will be implemented by November
1st,2015. If you have a free account, have images that are linked to
any sites, blogs or forums and want to continue to have images
delivered to those pages, please convert to premium account
here:https://imageshack.us/upgrade, for only $3.99/mo, you will
continue to have unlimited storage and unlimited delivery of your
images.

You can read about those changes in more details here:

That's what happened to me with Photobucket. My previous avatar as stored there and they removed it. I removed the rest of my images from there and now I have a few on Tinypic. Probably Tinypic will go that way, too.
If anyone has a solution, please let us know, else only website pictures will be able to be displayed here.

Nope. I moved to Tinypic when Image$hack started charging to host new pics (but implied the old photos could stay gratis).

I assume they are not related.

I use flickr. I think they guarantee photos will be there forever - free or with flickrpro.

I very much hope that's right,as my husband saved some stuff to flickr, and it's the one thing I didn't know his password for when he died, so I can't pay for flickr pro for his account.

Yep, I could, of course. Had a brain blip andwas confusing issues when I posted, Glitter. The password thing was linked to a different problem.

Note that, with a skim read, they aren't saying that your pix will disappear from their site, just that the pix won't be linkable to/from forums etc.

It wasn't the storage size that was the problem. It was the fact that there was a lot of traffic because my avatar was on PS. They wanted me to pay a premium price to have a lot of traffic to the image. That's why I moved my images to Tinypic.

It just gets better! In my inbox today (and you editor nerds or corporate communication experts, count the typos, bad syntax, bad grammar, just terrible crisis management, etc. and please contain your head explosions):

ImageShack Team <noreply@imageshack.us> Unsubscribe
1:23 PM (18 minutes ago)

to me
Dear ImageShack users, on September 29th '15, ImageShack has
suffered a very large service outage. We wanted to take time
to explain what happened, and how it affected your accounts
as well as Image delivery.

During a routine maintenance, a small mistake crept up into
one of our management tools that caused all our of servers
to wipe out their operating systems as well as most of the image
storage systems. You may want to ask, how can something
small cause such a large issue? Don't we have backups.
And Yes, indeed, we do have at least 3 copies as backups
of all your images.

ImageShack has been around since 2004, during that time
we have grown to store billions of images, and used hundreds of
servers to deliver those images to the internet. We always
relied on automated systems that allowed us to keep our
team relatively small, so that we could pass to cost savings
to you, our users. Unfortunately, with system automation
comes a risk of a mistake such as described above.

The good news, we were able to restore most of the images,
and continue to deliver them to you pages. The bad news
is that we lost about 4% of all images, across all accounts
(paid and free). This means that if you have a page with
100 images embedded, there perhaps would be between
3 to 5 images missing. We sincerely apologize for this
loss.

We have decided to take some serious steps regarding
ImageShack as a service. We want to absolutely
guarantee that your images will be delivered to your pages.
We do not resize images, we do not impose bandwidth
limits like other image hosting sites do. We do not put
claim to your images, and we do limit ads next to your
images, so that anyone who sees your images have the
best experience possible. For us to be able to promise
that - our business requires a transition to pay model only.

So, what are the steps we are taking? We will be
focusing on users that ImageShack matters to the
most - Those users are the users who have paid
accounts. If you are a user with free account, and do
not plan to upgrade, you have until January 31st, 2016
to download your images. After that date, only
paid accounts are going to continue to exist at ImageShack.

We are doing this so that we can put time an effort
towards our "premium" users who depend on ImageShack
for their businesses and other important functions. We want
to give 300% more quality and performance to those users,
they have certainly paid and earned the right to have it.

If you have had a paid account before, or have a free account
today, please consider upgrading to paid. Our plans start
at $3.99/mo. However, until January 31st 2016, we will be offering
a huge discount of $18.99/year only, as our thanks
to all users who are patient enough to stay with us through
this transition!

Sincerely,

ImageShack Team.

Translation: We want only you people who are willing to pay to benefit from our shitty service!

But to recap, they started charging for new photos a long time ago. What they didn't do is start charging for already posted (for free) photos. And we're going to start seeing red Xs in our historical posts thanks to that.

Your analogy doesn't work, eric. For a newspaper, you can just stop reading it. Imageshack marketed itself as a way to post images for free to discussion forums like the stew. Months ago they said they'd stop letting you host new images for free - fine, because we all switched to tinypic etc. But now they're going to wipe accounts, not allowing old photos to remain viewable via links unless I dig deep to the ridiculous tune of $4 a month.

I have pictures going back years on this site. To get them to stay up, I'd have to look for each one, host it elsewhere, and edit the link. Not gonna happen.

I'm not sure how the analogy 'doesn't work'. You also have the option of not using imageshack as a paid service like not reading paid newspapers online.

My point was a more general one about the inexorable slide of free internet services eventually become paid ones. The details and dishonesty of various services may differ but the general trend, I think, doesn't.

I'm fine, as long as they don't come back at me to pay for services previously provided for free.

I gave them use of my photos at no cost to me (and read their advertising in compensation). That was the deal when I gave them my photos. Now they want money for use of those same photos.

I don't see any reason for them to change, how on earth would it help google to start charging for searches or Facebook for accounts? I would say the trend is more towards free services with income via advertising, upsells, bonus content, etc. The old model for paying for owning a thing just isn't as popular or as successful online. You see this in a wide range of industries.

OK, that was too simple to begin with and not simple enough on the back end. I need to work with it... (tinypic app)

Wow, I just found this on the tinypic FAQ. So much for my images not going away...

Q: How long are images kept?
A: The images are kept until they have not been viewed for 90 days. After 90 days have elapsed, your image may be removed.

Well that was too much trouble and didn't work very well. I don't know what I did right the first time but it was less than ideal as well.

Tinypic app needs a lot of work. It isn't built for this purpose - yet.

Yeah, like newspapers.

I'm glad to see you've backed down from your ludicrous claim that all all free online services become paid eventually.
