For new & current users who can't get onto the board.

Post by incognita » Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:02 pm

Mutha recently updated the board and installed an aggressive anti-spambot filter, but it appears that at least couple of posters have been caught in it as well. If you're trying to log on or post and you get this message:

Antispam: account disabled, please contact an admin.

Please send an email to stew.moderator@gmail.com to let us know. Hopefully, we can get this glitch ironed out soon.

No, that is a really old message.

Basically we're too big for our webhost to deal with. Board may crash at some point again like it did a few weeks ago. Muthafunky (board admin) had a trouble ticket in with the web host asking why our memory isn't what we're paying for, or something.

Hit "cancel" when you see the login message, and refresh your screen. If it repeats, do it again. We're all getting it.

Cheers me dear!

I also fancied posting on this Sticky as no one has replied for nearly a year and I thought it a tad lonely.

(If it comes up after a long typing reply and you cancel and hit F5, do you lose all your wonderful prose?)

I do the C&P thing too just in case. Though if I just hit "back" after cancel it usually works.

F5? I'm on a mac! That reminds me of Windows 3.1! (No disrespect to muthafunky the stew God.)

I assume it's a Big Mac, you being in the US!

I'm on Windows 8 - I just waft my hands at the screen and it seems to type what I want.

On Windows 8, it's F13!

Is this site hosted on IIS? Reason I ask is that when I switched from Opera to IE I had no problems logging in.

Yes, it's IIS. I would be very surprised if browser mattered as the error generated is server side but I suppose nothing surprises me when it comes to Microsoft technology.

I have on many occasions seen those having problems making online bookings encounter problems with browers other than IE. Fact is it might be shit but I still reckon that most web applications are written with microshaft in mind

Smoker, there is a short 'probation' period where a mod has to pre-approve your posts. You only have a few more to go and you should be able to zoom right through it.

Sorry; everyone has to go through it. We get more than 200 spambots a day that try to post. The probation period is the only effective way we have found to let the legitimate posters through. Unfortunately, you've been posting at a time when not a lot of moderators are online to approve. But you should be past the probation period soon if not already. It goes by number of posts, so you're doing the right thing.

Also, as far as message board go, we're actually very light on censorship once you're actually past the probation period.

Yes, that bugged me a bit. What happened is I did a mass approve where I checked a bunch of them to approve at the same time. I did this twice. I hope the software counts all the real posts toward approval.

Hi pezworld,

[quote="pezworld"]Sorry; everyone has to go through it. We get more than 200 spambots [u]a day[/u] that try to post. The probation period is the only effective way we have found to let the legitimate posters through. [/quote]

Well by now it should be apparent that I am not a spambot so what are you waiting for?

[quote="pezworld"] The probation period is the only effective way we have found to let the legitimate posters through. [/quote]

Besides not being a spambot I am also not a Euro Lefty Cappachino Commie so does that make me legitimate or not legitimate?

[quote="pezworld"] Unfortunately, you've been posting at a time when not a lot of moderators are online to approve. [/quote]

What is unfortunate about that? I love the sandbox and won’t the board be improved by posters from thinly represented parts of the world?

[quote="pezworld"] But you should be past the probation period soon if not already. It goes by number of posts, so you're doing the right thing. [/quote]

So the plan is I just keep posting random whining about censorship and eventually you decide to stop censoring me.

[quote="pezworld"] Also, as far as message board go, we're actually very light on censorship once you're actually past the probation period. [/quote]

Yes that is what the thought police always say right up to that point they ban you for unclean thoughts.

BTW when I tried to plot my breakup story on the your worst break up thread I got this message:

“Your post looks too spamy for a new user, please remove bad words or non-english text. (porn)”

I never swear on message boards and there is no porn and I am not posting in Arabic so what is the problem?

Also when I tried to send a reply back to spampant’s private message the board wouldn’t allow me. Do you know any thing about that?

Anyway my break up story is more dramatic, pathetic, cringe worthy & childish than any of the stuff posted so far so you should allow me to put it up.

Warmest Regards, Smoker

Am I doing something wrong?

And why can't I edit my above post with the screwed up quotes?

It is horrible to read and needed to be fixed up so how do I do that?

Oh, I like you already! Some have talked about starting a fishing forum here but there are only a few hard-core fisherdudes. You'll find them and you'll like them. I don't fish enough to be considered a fisherdude, and I'm not a dude either. There are plenty of divers here too.

Where to begin? I haven't had enough coffee so in no particular order:

-Quotes may not work for any non-mod on this Troubleshooting branch, though that may be wrong. Certain functionality will be lacking for newer posters in any event. You'll get past it.

- One of the admins (there are two - muthafunky who's the board owner and incognita who's a regular admin) noticed there's a glitch with your handle, and I think she (incognita) may have somehow clicked a button to get you past the glitch. You are probably past the probation stage.

Besides not being a spambot I am also not a Euro Lefty Cappachino Commie so does that make me legitimate or not legitimate?

No more-or-less legit. There are more lefties than not, but we have a wide variety of non-commies here too, from the normal to the slightly insane.

And why can't I edit my above post with the screwed up quotes?

It is horrible to read and needed to be fixed up so how do I do that?

Editing functionality may be weird for you for a time, and when you're posting with gay abandon, your edited posts will be tagged as such. Mods can edit (their own or others') posts without it showing.

Well by now it should be apparent that I am not a spambot so what are you waiting for?

Yes, but see above. You have incognita to thank for possibly repairing your status. Otherwise it's something we can't easily fix until the poster gets past the probation period. I (ordinary mod) wouldn't be able to do it.

“Your post looks too spamy for a new user, please remove bad words or non-english text. (porn)”

I never swear on message boards and there is no porn and I am not posting in Arabic so what is the problem?

Hah. Possibly you posted a URL. This was a board software modification we had to implement to prevent all (unpaid) mods from quitting in a huff. It's a brilliant modification - it checks for all the things spammers/bots do and throws them into spambot purgatory without the mods having to deal with it. And since I posted the 200-bots-a-day comment, I counted and it's actually closer to 350 a day!

Also when I tried to send a reply back to spampant’s private message the board wouldn’t allow me. Do you know any thing about that?

Try again now since you may be past probation. Again, your ability to do stuff on the board will improve past probation and with more posts. You may also have trouble posting images but that will change. See the sticky on the Travel Journalism for tips on posting images.

We hope you'll like it here. You're feisty!

You sure? I just went to check and my profile says "BBCode is ON".
But this is what happens if I try to post a "quote" in Troubleshooting :

I'm not surprised. I've learned years ago that in this sub-forum (Troubleshooting) the usual tools simply don't work.
Including the "edit" function. Or in other words: they seem not-connected.
It's no problem. But it can be a surprise to those (common posters) who weren't aware yet.

No worries. There's nothing new about it. So imo you don't need to change anything.

Just try to get "Smoker" in, please. He seems to be a new handle. The board shouldn't make it too difficult for new posters to join.

Ok I will keep trying to use quotes and see if it sorts itself out. As soon as I am allowed to post at will I will try elsewhere. At the moment I don’t want to clutter things up outside of the Troubleshooting section of Political Stew.

pezworld wrote: Editing functionality may be weird for you for a time, and when you're posting with gay abandon, your edited posts will be tagged as such. Mods can edit (their own or others') posts without it showing.

I really don’t care if editing shows or not but just want to be able to correct speed typing mistakes that you never see in the creation process but only after the post is submitted; like this quotes not working thing.

pezworld wrote: Otherwise it's something we can't easily fix until the poster gets past the probation period.

Am I actually being moved along regarding the probation question because my number of posts count appears to be stuck at 2!

pezworld wrote: Hah. Possibly you posted a URL.

No it wasn’t an URL but is still giving me trouble; I guess the plan is to wait and see if my post count kicks in and I get past probation. Until then I will stay in Troubleshooting to keep the clutter to a minimum.

Anyway thanks for the information and help.

Try the Preview button before hitting the Submit button when you type a post. You can review your post and edit as necessary, then submit. I think editing for regular posters has a time limit that allows for quick fixes but then preserves what you wrote after a while.
