If any politician has a mandate to do something it’s this.

They should build it.

He has a mandate to build the wall.

Just as Obama had a mandate, and I said so at the time, to introduce Obamacare.

I realize you're a very stupid cunt, so is it possible you don't know what "mandate" means?

It doesn't mean when Trump and Putin have some them-time.

Hey, remember when chastised Obama for not closing Gitmo when he had the chance? Well, same thing: he had control of Congress for 2 years and didn't do it. The Dems even offered to fund the wall for DACA, he said no. In the mean time, he campaigned in the midterms on scary caravans and voters rejected his border control message.

He fucked up and there's no reason now to give him anything on the wall.

yep

the 'national emergency' is Trump can't deliver on a campaign promise and even if congress were to give him the 5 billion, it'd still be a failure to keep the promise because it's not paid for by Mexico nor would it cover the entire boarder

Idiotic, vacuous reasoning.

The Republicans resisted Obama's "mandate" with every fiber of their being. Trump's "mandate," The Wall, is apparently nothing more than a mnemonic created by aides to help him remember to talk about his platform of border security at campaign rallies. It's a nebulous thing that not even his own party will fund. And on top of that, he lost the popular vote by a truly substantial margin.

Maybe somebody who actually knew how to negotiate would have handled it better than Trump did. But guess what? Trump is a shit negotiator. He agrees with the last person he spoke to, because he has no attention span, which is why the Republicans are in this budget mess today.

But more broadly, Trump is a shit negotiator because he doesn't know how to negotiate. He knows how to praise those he's currying or has received favor from, and attack and intimidate those who oppose him. His supporters like that.

What did you think about the urgent email his campaign sent out to Trump supporters in the guise of Wall money? And you think this guy deserves a mandate. Sorry, bullies don't always win, and while you will spend the rest of the post-Trump years vociferously denying you ever supported him, posts like this will be a reminder of where you stood when this anti-democratic buffoon was handed the reins to the most important office in the world.

The mandate argument I get for political parties winning a majority in a uk election with an explicit manifesto pledge - but only in the context of the Salisbury convention that says the unelected lords can’t block a majority government manifesto pledge being enacted indefinitely.

In the American system where both houses and the president are elected it’s a straight fight for the agenda and legislation

He ran on having Mexico pay for the wall. So if he has any 'electoral mandate' it's to build a wall that Mexico is paying for and that the American taxpayer is not paying for.

I think that was only for a few months, until the new (albeit non-existent) vetting procedures were implemented.

Of course, you can be sure the terrorists are taking advantage of the shutdown!

Yes, he has a mandate to build a wall that Mexico pays for. No need for the US Congress to appropriate any money to fulfill that mandate.

Congress, which is never controlled by the president, passed legislation by veto-proof majorities forbidding the transfer of detainees from Guantánamo to the United States.

What do you think Obama should have done in the face of that?

You would need at least 350- at least, hopefully 400 to really act like it- electoral votes to be considered as having a mandate, if you want to ignore the popular vote.

Obama had like 60 more electoral votes and millions more popular votes.

Trump has a mandate to do his best and not completely fail, and that is about it. He should work on bringing people together and forget about thinking he has a mandate. That's hubris of the right today. Be less awful, huh?

Trump is onto it! A tweet:

He said all kinds of bullshit.

And, on top of that, many members of the House and even the Senate were elected after saying that they opposed Trump's wall. Why should they go against the desires of their constituents? It's not fair. The US is not a dictatorship of the Executive Branch.

No, he doesn't have a mandate. He won the election with several million fewer votes than his opponent, and most Americans do not want a border wall. They still don't. It's a retarded idea, and you are a retard for embracing it. Fuck off, and shit in your hand. Mexico is a lovely place, and the net flow of migration is toward Mexico from the US.

Congrss stopped aobama from shutting down Gitmo, as the constitution allowed them to do. Same here.

75% of Americans say that building the wall should not be a high priority.

I notice that your only argument for building the wall is that Trump said he would (while never saying that taxpayers would pay for it). So you think the wall is actually a good thing or not? Do you think it is important enough to justify shutting down the government in order to try to get it?

You don't understand how the electoral system works.

If you did, then you wouldn't be talking about the popular vote.

It's like saying, yes we lost the baseball game 5-2, but we got 7 hits and they only got 5.

You can't set the game up to be scored one way, and then claim some kind of victory when you count "points" that aren't meant to count.

I repeat, you do NOT understand how the electoral system works. If you did, then you wouldn't be talking about things that don't count. You wouldn't try to change the game after the fact.

But hey, they don't call you tards for nothing. So it's not like I'm surprised.
