Poll: Obama tops list ranking best president in Americans' lifetime

More than 40 percent of Americans say that Barack Obama was the best or second-best president in their lifetime, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center.

The poll asked people in an open-ended format which president has done the best job in their lifetimes, using respondents' first and second choices for the survey's findings.

Forty-four percent of Americans said Obama was either the best or the second-best president in their lifetime, with 33 percent saying the same for Bill Clinton. Thirty-two percent said Ronald Regan was the best or second-best president in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, 19 percent said the same for President Trump, who has been in office since 2017.

The survey notes that Americans' views on the best president is largely tied to their age. Millennials were more likely than older generations to list Obama as the best president in their lifetime, while older Americans are much more likely to name Reagan as the best president.

Sixty-two percent of millennials believe Obama is either the best or second-best president in their lifetime. On the other hand, about 4 in 10 of the two older generations (baby boomers and the the silent generation) named Reagan the best president.

Pew notes that most millenials were born after Reagan presided as president.

The survey shows that a divide along party lines exists. Seventy-one percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say Obama is the best or second-best president in their lifetime. Meanwhile, 57 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say Reagan was the best in their lifetime.

The Pew survey was conducted from June 5 to 12 among a population of 2,002 adults. The survey has a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
Have to say I agree. I used to believe Clinton was the best in my lifetime for helping to move the post-Cold War and peace dividend economy in the right direction, but Obama helped to turn around the the Great Recession economy and bring Iraq and Afghanistan under control. Let's face the facts- Obama won the War on Terror by defeating ISIS. He inherited a terrible mess, and made America great again.

How about some of you old timers? Who do you think was best?

i have to say, this poll really doesn't mean that much, even as much as i like Obama. if you read the story, it basically says the choice had more to do with age.

the notion that more baby-booomers chose Reagan than any other President horrifies me. but Reagan dominates the Right, while i am sure the left was split over various other choices. another reason this poll does not mean that much

truly watching America go down the toilet if almost 1/5th of Americans think he was the best in their lifetime.

When it comes to facing facts, you're very reluctant.

Obama droned and beat them for years and got the Iraqi Army up to snuff to make the final blows.

Again If O’bummer was such a great president why didn’t the American public vote for more of the same.

o’bummers enduring legacy is Donald trump. Is that something to be proud of?

There’s no “if”. He was, at least according to the US public.

And, 3 million more Americans voted Hillary than Trump.

Irrelevant. The fact is that your messiah laid the foundations for the current state of affairs. if the electoriate was so enamoured of the mans legacy then why didn’t they overwhelming vote for more of the same?

Hillary isn’t Obama. She didn’t have his or much of any style.

If Obama ran against Trump, he would have crushed the orange entity.

Also, white boys, like spoiled children, don’t know what is good for them.

I agree with korgy that the poll doesn't mean much.

But I would have voted for Obama. I was alive for Truman but not aware of his presidency, and not really able to rate Eisenhower except from reading about him more recently the way anyone could. So the comparison really starts with JFK.

For me, it probably starts with Nixon, I was in middle-school when he resigned. I would have chosen Obama as well.

Not really surprised about Reagan though. He is credited (by a lot of people) with bringing down the Soviet Union.
I wonder how many of those people also voted for Trump. Interesting how an ex-KGB officer is now BFF with the president.

Heh, my phone auto corrected 'KGB' to spy. ..

I’d prefer poll of people born in 1950 to 1960. That would cover living memory pretty well
