I think he was a massive alcoholic for many years (decades). His body was probably thrashed.
My revolutionary farmer friend once labeled me as "severely creative." Yes, yes, I like tall-bike building and riding, making fermented foods, wild-crafting and being silent in places where there are no human sounds.

maybe he didnt want to write what the docs came up with in the end.

Yes, the indefinite hospital stay along with the continuing weight loss and his inability to walk were all signs that the end was not too far off. I didn't think he was going to make it out of this one.

He said his liver function was OK, I think, so I would bet it was the smoking that got him, more than the drinking.

he was underweight for quite some time and had gone his doctor who gave him antibiotics repeatedly. He had the coughing for awhile. It's said if TB isn't treated properly it can be fatal. I can't believe his regular doctor never tested him for it. He couldn't either. It can affect other parts of the body not just the lungs and kill people. Maybe something else killed him, but it also could have been the TB affecting the rest of his body and causing all the other shit that killed him. We'll never know.

I think he had end stage alcoholism. The stuff on the net that seems to point to that is:

- The gastrointestinal system is thrashed and can no longer digest food or absorb the nutrients from it, hence malnutrition.
- Lowered resistance to disease
- Drinking all day, starting from morning
- Most end stage alcoholics die of liver or heart failure.
- Increased number of accidents because coordination is poor and the brain is effected
- Gastrointestinal bleeding

I think that the accidents, sheep dip incident etc. were the result of him being under the influence of alcohol or it having scrambled his brain and body.

If he was an end stage alcoholic and constantly drunk, I don't think his posts reflected that. His posts were very lucid.

He was always in denial about being an alcoholic. Maybe he knew at the end and didn't tell us.

I think that speculation, especially couched in such confident tone, is probably inappropriate.

The confident tone is misplaced, but surely baseless speculation is not out of place here. See: about half of ZAffer's posts, e.g. about the Malaysian airliner that went missing.

Why is speculation inappropriate. I liked him a lot. He was a brilliant man. I think about him. I wonder what happenned. How it happenned.

Apologies if my post offended.

I used to work in an area that dealt with 'cause of death' and used to talk about these things as part of work. I'm probably a bit desensitized.

I think Zaffers passing has affected a lot of people way more than they could have expected,i keep thinking about him all the time which is odd as we weren't best-good-buddies or anything,i just liked him and his posts.

yeh, when he was ill he stopped drinking (like a month here and there or something). but yes, alcoholic. But seriously, tb causes unexplained weight loss. sheep dip did not help.

It seemed as if he often announced proudly how long it had been since his last drink, or that he had only had two cigarettes since x, but he did keep announcing it, with different starting dates for the period of abstinence.

All he ever posted was I've been here X days and they still don't know what is wrong with me.

Anything beyond that is speculation.

I ve never thought it possible, but I agree with Lincoln.

And as for being inappropriate: Really, no wonder people avoid others in pain when nearly anything they say is seen as silly and inappropriate.

It's not necessarily inappropriate, just a little odd. Zaffer has died, trying to pin down exactly what the cause of death was, when none of us (bar his wife) knew him properly in real life, is impossible to do.

I loved the viking ship video, it really made me laugh. And yes, Lincoln, you speak wise words. First time I've ever agreed with you I reckon!

I think wondering whether it was TB or cancer or whatever, is not inappropriate at all. But posting in a style that seems to express almost certainty (and about alcoholism, no less) is weird.

"I wonder if..." is one thing. But the tone of yeh yeh's post seemed bizarrely confident that this was the how he died.

ahhhh well. bottom line. it's sad. seeing someone who was a constant colourful voice here suddenly gone impacts people in different ways. it seems almost incomprehensible how alive he sounded and how now he's not here, i can understand why people are grasping at understanding why and how.

I said 'I think', not I know. And I said 'If he was' not 'he was'

I once posted something about my own drinking and whether that would lead to alcoholism, and zaffer responded saying that there is no such thing as alcoholism.

And I regard alcoholism as a disease, not a judgement.

And I agree with Lincoln, it has affected a lot of us.

Gabz alluded to a few pretty life threatening problems Zaffer had but despite that I am really unclear as to what unfolded . He wasn't big on specifics and that was OK
It still bothers me terribly that he spent so much time in the hospital and went through so many painful procedures only for it to have been for nothing

Zaffer clearly enjoyed investigating/debating/arguing a mystery, so ... interesting that he left us all with one that, unless a complete autopsy is done, the answer will never be known?

i don't understand why he died as even being an issue here.
i'm personally not at all interested.
i'm going with it was zaff's time, his time, his choice to make this the time.

assuming this was aimed at me.
tell, me, at this point is there a benefit in whether or not you know he died from alcoholism, cancer, sheep dip or any other reason?

celebrate the man, not what caused him to pass.

i'll miss those exchanges.
