I was on a reconnaissance mission. I got cheapish flights and a good deal on the hotel. My sleeping pattern is still all over the place. Even the melatonin I bought in the US isn't working. There wasn't bad coffee really. It was consistently good, and on occasion excellent.

No, I'm fully committed to Ireland. I set up my own business last year, so I'm here for the foreseeable future. I was down there looking for some inspiration. I would miss living in Europe too much anyway. Nicer weather isn't a big enough pull for me. Salaries in Oz are lower in my former industry, too. Professional salaries are surprisingly low compared to here, but Irish people paying ourselves too much is one of the causes of our stagnant economy. If I were a tradesman, then I'd probably be there already.

Yes professional salaries are low. It's more than the strength of the AUD that has caused that, too. We are going through a massive restructuring of our economy. It's one of the reasons we dress so badly ....

Well, there isn't much work for tradesmen here, seeing as we have enough empty housing to allow us to double the population tomorrow.

I heard on the BBC World Service yesterday that at the height of the property boom, 18% of the workforce were employed in construction - that puts even Australias bubble to shame

It wasn't as high as that. A good proportion were employed in "construction-related" or "property-related" industry. That ranges from builders to conveyancing solicitors to bank tellers. I think your crash will be almost as bad, but that's for another thread. One thing we have going for us is that we still produce lots of stuff that people like to buy. We have a huge trade surplus.

People are starting to feel positive and spend again. The feeling of melancholy had been palpable for the past four years. I don't sense that anymore. Restaurants, bars and shops are busy again.

We are not going to have a housing crash. Australian banking and finance law wont permit it and the rules for the release of land on which to build wont permit it. There is never, never enough housing stock to meet demand in Australia lolar, let alone cause overspeculation. What we are going to see is the collapse of the retail sector. IMHO.

Oh - that's a good point. We had a recession in Canberra last time. But would it be big enough to cause a crash on the scale that ocurred in Ireland and America and whereever? Even during the recession we had to have, housing prices didn't collapse like that.

Australian banking and finance law won't permit it

Huh? There have been many housing bubbles in history, they never have soft landings. Your banks are no more conservative than European or US ones. I really have no idea where that myth has emanated from. You are completely over leveraged. I'm not going to forecast when your property market will crash, but it is going to crash. Australia will not be a new paradigm for an unburstable bubble.

We'll have a crash once China has paid off enough African countries to be able to source its natural resource requirements from that continent, and no longer needs us.

Housing costs, as such, are not the problem. Lack of diversity in the economy is.

LOL...another fantasy...and yet, there is a place in Australia where the prices will continue to rise. There is hardly anything in the world as stunning as the Western subs of Sydney...especially around the harbor. It is a spectacular city. Yet, even in Sydney some of its areas are hideous.

I don't do anal.

There's a sizeable group of the Aussies (but not me) who believe Tony Abbott will cause a property crash, along with outlawing contraception. Also, that he is the Anti-Christ and the Pope's right-hand man.
